Their domain stretched as far north as York and depending on the era as far south as London. At various times they were even ruled by the English. At some point though King Ethelred the Unready (one of the most unflattering names in the history of Kings, right up there with Charles the Fat, Charles the Bald, Louis the Stammerer and John Lackland) got it into his head that the Vikings would revolt, kill him and take his land. He then ordered a massacre along the frontier of the Danelaw (the territory where the Vikings lived) in which Gunhilde sister of Sweyn Forkbeard the King of Denmark was killed along with her husband. Ethelred was not ready for the consequences of his actions, hence the nickname.

2020-11-13 15:04:47 +0000 UTCA lot of it would be spoiling future events, so I'd keep quiet. And yes, the author Makoto Yukimura really did/does his research when writing this series. I especially love how basically all the characters are based either on historical figures or mythological figures from Norse stories. You and Curtis, and anyone else watching for the first time, are in for a real treat.

If he killed Thors man to man, then he would break the law and have to face the consequences(there were fairly strict and important laws in viking society). So in this way he can uphold the jomviking way of not letting deserters survive, while not getting caught up in a legal battle or legal trouble.

2020-11-13 14:29:46 +0000 UTCWow, this is also my first time seeing this series, and I’m blown away at how much real history is represented here! As someone who has some knowledge of the time period, I’m tempted to clarify/explain some of the more interesting aspects...but I’m not sure what would and wouldn’t be spoiling future events, so I’ll keep quiet for now lol. Going episode by episode should be fine though. One small detail I thought was cool though, is how religious beliefs among the Vikings is already being represented. Leif’s use of wine according to Christian customs may seem out of place, but by this time period (year 1000) Vikings have been trading, raiding, and conquering all across Western Europe for 200 years. It’s only natural that these kinds of cultural exchanges happened over time. Of course, many Vikings would still hold on to some of their pagan beliefs as a matter of culture and tradition, as shown when Leif later also mentions Odin granting favorable winds for Thors’ journey. As well as the scene at the end with the men taking part in the time-honored Viking tradition of killing Christians in as many “fun” ways as possible. Overall, there’s a ton of interesting historical elements already, and I’m looking forward to seeing more!
