Curtis, the Hogyoku is actually an artificial or modified piece of the Soul King, the thing Aizen wants to replace. Through the tiny pieces of the soul King that split from his main body, hollows, quincies, and shinigamis were created. This is why it has the power to manifest the desires of those around it. You won't find this out unless you delve into the Lore, so it isn't a Spoiler. Btw, Gin is the only person on Aizen's side that relies on his own power. Everyone else, including Aizen, was modified by the Hogyoku. It is for this reason, I call Gin the 2nd Strongest Soul Reaper. Old man is 1st, obviously.

The name of Gin's Shikai Shinso translates to "God Spear". His bankai Kamishini no Yari translates to "God-killing Spear". I thought it was kind of cool since the names sound so different

Knowing what we know later, Gin is one of my favorite characters in this series. Knowing the long game he was playing here, and how he uncompromisingly stuck to it, just makes these moments so much more incredible for his character. It also makes me wonder if, Ichigo showing up when he did, saving Rangiku from certain death by Aizen, was the Hogyoku responding to Gin's desires to keep Rangiku safe.
