Think about it, the first person he meets and becomes friends with, starts out by shooting him, so maybe in his mind now when he has a violent encounter with someone at first that's why he eventually ends up viewing them as a friend.

When you think about it she is kind of a weaker character, she never really gets involved in fights, more often than not she's a damsel in distress or a plot device. In this case the one who invented the Dragon Radar.
