I’m talking about gruesome death and a fucked up situation that will make you sick. But this was the show that inspired all of them

Don Qixote did it with classic knight novels, Watchmen and The Boys did it with superheroes, Neon Genesis Evahgelion did it with mecha, Re:Zero did it with isekai, PMMM did it with magical girl anime. Usually characters treat their new job as a fun adventure, they're rarely in real danger (after all, the genre is targeted at children and teenagers). In PMMM every enemy is dangerous and every fight can be fatal, the fact that magical girls are teenagers makes it even worse. Usually girls get their powers from a benevolent mystical being who helps them afterwards. In PMMM you can see that it takes a callous and cruel person to send little girls to battle. Once you learn the truth about the magical girls, it's no surprise that Kyubey is incapable of empathy and often lies (even if only by omission) to find new recruits. Usually magical girls are altruistic, they fight to save people. In PMMM most magical girls initially do it to get a wish, later they have to obtain grief seeds to survive. That's why they usually work alone, their job promotes selfishness. Usually the protagonist is the first one to become a magical girl, she's the most powerful because she's the friendliest and the kindest. In PMMM same qualities make Madoka hesitate the longest. She is terrified of what is expected of magical girls, she only wants to do it because she wants to help people. Usually each character is defined by a single trait, it's easier for writers to create them and for audience to understand them. In PMMM it's a sign of unstable mind or mental trauma. "Big sister" Mami is lonely and clings to anyone who wants to be friends. "Pure fighter" Sayaka burns out quickly. "Daredevil" Kyoko feels betrayed by people she loved and doesn't trust anyone. "Cold" Homura has to block her emotions, otherwise she will break down in tears.

As you said, this story was nowhere near expected, and looking at where we started and how we ended is insane. Madoka has just became a law of the universe now, so when a magical girl would become a witch, they disappear instead because Madoka takes that despair from them. So we saw in this new universe, Sayaka ended up disappearing instead of turning into a witch because of 'The Law of the Cycle" as in Madoka. This show has the definition of bittersweet endings. We're left with a world where magical girls don't deal with the horrible fate of turning into a witch, but magical girls still have to fight, and now Madoka is gone. Thanks for watching this masterpiece :D
