Young Luffy is portrayed to have characteristics of Kid Goku just the child like nature, the stupidity and innocence while having devotion to his loved ones all culminate similarities between both protagonist. I can even say the inspiration of Kid Goku also has an direct impact on some characteristics of current Luffy, but whenever you Kid Luffy it’s just a complete reminder of watching Kid Goku from Dragon Ball.

It would have been way better idea to use Luffy as a bait. Beat him couple of hours and after "let him go" (and follow him). With Luffy's stupidity he would have led everyone right to Sabo&Ace...
