Not wrong seeing as even Whiebeard's own allied forces started to doubt him. It makes Akainu's story more convincing when you see that the Pacifista's were going after the allied ships and not the Whitebeard crew themselves which I feel like was probably intentional on the Marines part.

Idk. I don't think you're giving Squard enough credit. It's not like they gave him a weak lie. I personally feel like the lie/story they gave him was pretty convincing. I don't think at all Squard is an idiot for falling for it. Akainu was just too cunning and convincing with his story. Everything he said sounded pretty legit, and it's hard not to believe something that sounds legit.

What I do like about this war is that up to this point, it's been an uphill battle for Whitebeard. Even during his and other's moments of badassery, The Navy has had an answer to each tactic and shows good adaptability thanks to leadership from Sengoku. Now they have the bulk of WB's men entrapped within a wall while giant fists of lava rain down on them, melting the ice they're standing on. Even though Oars' body is blocking the wall, getting through a chokepoint will still be difficult.

It’s awesome to see little details in One Piece. Luffy not being able to stretch to save himself is really cool because it reminds us that Luffy has limits to his stretching which aren’t brought up that often and how he can’t just stretch himself out of every falling situation. They could’ve easily just had Luffy stretch up to save himself from falling and no one would’ve questioned it.

This arc is an absolute roller-coaster. Some time I'm really glad the anime stretch thing out with pacing cause when this came out in the manga for the first time it didn't give a room to breath.
