4kids is the reason I never gave one piece a chance. I just blew it off as just a dumb show I wouldn’t like. Having watched Naruto and Bleach, I was on the fence about watching it for that last few years since it was the last of the big three. It wasn’t until you reached the Arlong Park arc that I finally started the series. 5 months of bingeing later, I caught up to the currently airing arc and One Piece cemented itself as one of my top 3 favourite anime. God damn I’m glad I finally watched it

ah they didnt do a horrible job on Yu-Gi-Oh I mean its corny as hell but with the shadow realm being a decent idea it mostly worked. One Piece is a travesty though. one of those side characters literally sounded like it was recorded from a phone call. talk about phoning it in lol Still think it's funny the Dub ends in a them about to die cliffhanger.

Lol funny thing is, I wouldn't even be a One Piece fan if it wasn't for 4kids in some roundabout way. I didn't watch anime when I was in HS and when I graduated I was going through a nostalgia trip and I re-watched old animes I saw on toonami back in the day. Like Dragon Ball, Yu Yu Hakusho etc. After going through all of the ones I knew I was sitting there trying to remember other animes. And then I remembered there was a show about a kid being a pirate and wanting to be the pirate king. I remember being interested in finding out if he became the pirate king because it's been years so the show clearly must be over. But for the life of me I couldn't remember what the name of the show was. I only watched a couple of episodes (buggy arc so real early on) All I could remember was the opening rap song. Yohoho he took a bite of gum gum. (ironically we have Brook now with the yohohoho lmfao) So, I got on youtube and typed that part of the song lyric in and found out the show was One Piece. So, I youtubed One Piece Episode 1 English dubbed and all 195 episodes of One Piece English dub by funimation was on youtube back in the day. So, I watched all 195 episodes and the rest is pretty much history. Had to switch to sub because lack of episodes and 2 years after I caught up with the sub they finally started releasing more dub. Funimation dub is good. 4kids is so bad that they're not even a company anymore.

I will say that 4kids did an amazing job with Yu-Gi-Oh, I think it even did an amazing job with the creation of the shadow realm despite some other changes. Despite that, this is just a bad adaptation of One Piece, it's enjoyable to watch the changes but knowing the original material makes the experience too cringey to watch haha

This isn't necessary, but I want to go over many of the things that ruined this moment in the story. 1. The soundtrack is fucking terrible. It never fits the mood of any moment in the show and it makes you feel as if you shouldn't actually care about the characters' peril because it's all wacky and dramatic! I mean at the same time which does not mesh well for the tone that is One Piece. 2. The voice acting overall was terrible and felt phoned in, as if the VA's were aliens pretending to be human. They placed unnecessary accents on the characters like Ganzo and it makes the town feel so out of place, like you can't picture everyone actually having lived there their whole life. It's pointless and demeaning to not only the character but also the originators of the accent. 3. Mermen? Phuman? Why? Arlong is a villain that you can hate just by his actions alone, but those actions aren't even shown because of the censoring. Bellemere's crushed arm? Ganzo getting bloody gashes across his whole body? Bellemere's DEATH!? All are lost and it makes Arlong seem like some rando mob boss, so they have to make him sound evil instead of be evil. His words can't be to the point, they have to beat you over the head with strange words that no one would use and an effect being applied to him and all the other FISHMEN to make them sound different, labeling them as the bad guys just by sound alone. The current arc Curtis is in has already shown that fishmen are people too and they have a fucked up past and 4Kids shits all over this nuance. 4. Bellemere's death had such meaning because we see her hit Nami when Nami threw a fit and said Bellemere wasn't her real mom. That had weight to it because it showed Bellemere not standing for such a declaration. It showed Bellemere's brutal but caring love in one moment and then to hear that she resigned herself to death until she met Nojiko and Nami is felt right in the gut. Then to sacrifice her life for her two daughters just after the argument makes us feel for Nami deeply and this feeling is dashed when we hear that she's just being taken to a fucking dungeon which then makes the story more muddled when Arlong is defeated! Where is this dungeon and why aren't we freeing Bellemere? It's all gone. And then Nami's deal makes even less sense as we don't really get the reason why she's collecting the money and the VA does a terrible job portraying the emotion of a child that just lost her mother and has her back against a wall. 5. Pacing is the most important thing when you tell a story. Without proper pacing your audience is either bored from the slow pace or confused from the breakneck pace. The cuts are random. The VO's don't have time to breath between their sentences. Each moment is just moving to move and a scene that was already quickly paced is even quicker and a slow scene moves too fast. You can't get invested because you're too busy trying to pick up the pieces being thrown about without care. The midway point isn't tense, it's frustrating because the momentum wasn't building up properly and you go from a scene that looks like it's about to be action packed to a scene that is supposed to be tense. Imagine having to see that balled up fist and then COMMERCIAL BREAK! It leaves you on the edge of your seat, but then you get back to the show and there's no immediate action. The anticipation is killed. The ending too is poorly done. It's supposed to be this strange feeling with Ganzo and Rat Face going to see Nami. You aren't sure why and this feeling sinks into you that something bad might happen and then it does and you feel Nami's, Nojiko's, and Ganzo's pain, but for the episode to end on the very start of that after the confusion that was the flashback, you can only be left with more confusion especially when Luffy is reacting to it and CUT TO CREDITS! What is happening? Why is it happening? The episode didn't just end hanging off a cliff, it fucking jumped down into the shark infested water and screaming FUCK THE WORLD while jacking itself off. Was this necessary? No, but damn it I had to fucking do it cause FUCK 4Kids for putting this shit on TV.

well that was a "treat" lol, in a way watching 4kids is a rite of passage as both an anime fan and a one piece fan, it's just something you've got to experience once in your life, like a scar it'll always be with you. also that's really not a joke even with my bad memory I still remember a decent amount of this dub. There's bottom of the barrel and then there's 4kids, they reached the bottom and just kept scraping away till they reached bedrock, well at least you've now seen the worst anime you'll ever see. Take solace in knowing this is probably the last time you'll have to see an episode of it lol, my next vids will be shoujo stuff for the most part lol. back to the safety of Cardcaptor Sakura and Ouran Hostclub. and the occasional extra thrown in now and again.

What the heck? The announcer sounds like Seto Kaiba from the dub version of Yu-Gi-Oh. I've watched the 4kids dub version back when I was little but I never noticed that. I'm pretty sure that that's kaiba's voice actor.

I don’t watch One Piece, but as a huge Yu-Gi-Oh! fan I enjoy watching these quite a bit. Unlike YGO though, which they actually managed to make enjoyable even with the censorship by adding humor, this dub is an absolute failure (especially when it comes to the jokes, so there isn’t much unironic enjoyment to be found).
