CHAIRSHOT BRAIN DAMAGE EXPLANATION

With some people seemingly upset about my memory failings, as with today's Bleach episode, I thought I would take a moment to explain why this type of thing (Forgetting what Zangetsu looks like) will always be an occasional occurrence for me:

The Post-Concussion Syndrome sucks, but it's something that, for the most part, is just an inconvenience. How it works is really weird, though. In day-to-day routine, it makes remembering things from moment to moment a challenge. However, most stuff - if repeated enough - will eventually stick. That's why I don't forget things as continuous as, for instance, the name Monkey D. Luffy.

The downside is, there are certain details which, completely inexplicably, escape me. For instance, remembering SharkBoy Day Walker's real name. (Kisame, I had to look it up.)  :-D

Beyond that are the moments that REALLY frustrate me. Every so often, I will have what I call "black spells". This is when whatever I'm hearing or experiencing simply vanishes. Sometimes the memories caught up in this will last for a a day, sometimes, a few hours and other times a matter of minutes. These are the ones that piss me off and make me understand that someday I might end up sitting in a corner, nodding and drooling... Scary, but it is what it is.

The way I can tell the difference between these "black spells" and the normal memory inconsistencies is because the stuff from those blackouts absolutely doesn't exist to me. Typically, when I forget something like Zangetsu, as soon as you guys mention it, the memory comes back and I'm like "Oh yea! Shit!" -- In this case, that memory was entirely gone. I had to go back through episodes, just so I could see that I had, indeed, experienced him before... Those types of memory loss really frustrate me.

I just thought I'd try to explain this to you guys, just so you understand that, sometimes, I'm just gonna be blanked out on a specific memory. Fortunately, so far, it doesn't happen a whole lot, but this was one of those ominous moments that makes me wonder if I might have a black hole for a future... I hope not.

This isn't something I talk about a lot. My wife knows of the issues, but it scares her to think about, so I typically keep it to myself. We've become clearly a family here at The GOOSH, and so I thought it appropriate - and kinda cathartic - to talk to you guys about it.  :-)

Comments

Talk about scary thoughts in the dark yesh this is why I prefer to dwell on happy thoughts.

None ya

Don’t feel bad at all, My Friend. The main impetus behind the post was just to share with you guys what goes on in my damaged head. I thought it was an appropriate time to share as forgetting that scene with Zangetsu was the first one of those “black spells” I’ve had with anything anime related in a long time. Typically, it’s just the usual forgetfulness, but this was one of those “nope, it never happened” moments for me.

Spaz Boys Comedy

Well now i feel like a jerk... I left a comment on that video mentioning that you had already seen Zangetsu.. And you had already posted this hours before I watched your reaction. I should have paid closer attention to the home page. Anyways, no worries about the memory thing but thank you for explaining it. I've only been a patron since you started Bleach, and had only watched some of your reactions on YouTube a few months prior... So a lot of these types of details, I missed. I heard you mention memory loss from wrestling but I always imagined it was more of a light-hearted joke, I never realized there was a specific indecent that caused a head injury. I know how it feels, i don't have the same problem exactly but for some reason, my brain struggles to hold onto numbers. It is incredibly frustrating to easily forget what others easily remember. Unfortunately, i have no excuse other than being mathematically retardant.

Mr. Miles

As someone whose had 2 concussions(told I have early signs of pcs), and been diagnosed with severe ADD for 17 years ago, I understand. Sometimes I tease people about not remembering everything(and I haven't seen the episode yet or read the comments), but I understand firsthand it can get very REAL when you can't remember something you absolutely feel like you should. Especially with pcs later in life. I've followed and rewatched OP for almost 2 decades to understand and know everything I do about it. I don't think it's at all surprising when you forget things and I don't think less of you for it. I couldn't watch 6 episodes of 3 different shows and g100 videos a week and keep track unless I was VERY into them. You do a great job Goosh Man. You're doing fine. I appreciate you opening up about the exact condition, I had guessed but wasn't sure.

SilversLyfe

A good friend's husband had a concussion too, and he experiences something similar. He used to be a pro gamer with sponsors and everything, but can't do that anymore, because he would have those black spells or blank out while playing. Concussions are scary, so thanks for sharing something so personal with us!

agreed

SilversLyfe

He's actually pretty good with remembering One Piece. Other than things involving the marines, which haven't really been focused on, he's remembering most of the people who have been highlighted and matter. Ya there are a few here or there but OP has +1100 named characters and a lot has already happened. We've all had to rewatch or read arcs many times to get to our full understanding of it.

SilversLyfe

Not at all. None of you guys in here were in the “upset” category. This post was just to share what the experience of these memory issues is like.

Spaz Boys Comedy

Yea, through the whole concussions ordeal, I’ve learned that they affect people in a wildly differing intensity. Some people get just one and have lifelong repercussions from it. 😞

Spaz Boys Comedy

side note, i dont think i could survive a single impact from a chair to my head, let alone get away with a faulty memory. i recall that i once passed out in school from a randomly thrown lollipop hitting me in the head. clinic was quite fun tho, good food and tv

astherphoenixxx96

I’m sorry if it seemed like I was upset! I was just trying to be helpful

Ultra Power

Definitely the biggest fear for me, My Friend.

Spaz Boys Comedy

Memory issues aside, each of the 3 main series you’ve been watching has thrown a lot of characters at you in the past few episodes. Not to mention the G100 videos. Anyone who complains about someone forgetting about a single character under these circumstances, even someone with decent memory, is simply asinine. For what it’s worth, I’m amazed at how well you’ve kept up with characters during the last week, especially in Code Geass.

Josh

just take care of yourself. All you can do

Corey Dillon

Memory issues are scary. I think Alzheimer's and dementia are probably two of my biggest fears for later in my life.

Tyler

Concussions are a miserable malady! The doctor explained to me how they affect everyone completely differently. I've had a large number of them, but some people can have even more severe lifetime symptoms than I have from just a single one... They can be pretty scary! It sucks for your friend that she deals with that after only one. Hopefully, it might subside for her somewhat as time goes on.

Spaz Boys Comedy

I'll point you to my response to you on a comment further down the list if you actually want to understand exactly why this post was made. You're making a huge, erroneous leap in telling everyone that I made this post solely due to responses on this video. I also wrote all this as a means to share some details with you guys, not to stir up a hornet's nest of what is or isn't warranted.

Spaz Boys Comedy

@PKKite Actually, the reason that this post begins with, "With some people seemingly upset about my memory failings, AS WITH today's Bleach episode," is because I had been getting feedback from some time about people either simply questioning or being frustrated with my inability to remember seemingly easy to remember details. By “as with” I meant to reference me forgetting the meeting of Zangetsu, not the comments specific to that. As today's slip was one of those rare "black spells" I have where the memory is completely gone for me, I thought this a good opportunity to let everyone know what exactly goes on with these issues. This is something I wanted to share with you guys because it explains what I experience, and I feel close enough to all of you to have no problem in sharing it. It was not only in response to today’s comments, but something ongoing. You suggesting that this had to be isolated to comments made today insinuates that commenters were somehow rude. The comments I was referring to as far as people being “upset” have come in both PMs and comments made during exit interviews. Comments from today were more of what simply inspired me to share, in greater detail, what exactly I go through with these issues. Please don’t take it upon yourself to answer questions from others on my behalf if you don’t have all the details of the answer.

Spaz Boys Comedy

i second this. i didn't sense any negativity in the tones tbh

astherphoenixxx96

Wait someone complained about it?

Kamui

I think of you as a pervy Grandpa and only want to support what you do. Ignore anyone trying to throw flak at you for having a memory issue that is clearly out of your control.

Patrik

Well at least now people that don't know about this do. It never bothered me though.

I've got a friend who developed a similar situation after getting a concussion, so I totally get it. Whenever she forgets things like that, she calls it her Big Brain Energy Mode.

SL

It’s all good I can’t imagine most of us don’t know by now how your memory is. New people may not yet but hopefully they read this. I’ve been pleasantly surprised how well you have done overall with one piece so far.

Jcw490

Yes, I did. My "C'mon guys" was more attuned to the fact that people need to read the other comments before repeating the same thing over and over. It can come across as insulting, whether intentionally or not. There's no need to try to call me out, dude.

Imani Brooks

I've already been well-warned about what potential complications could arise, and I have a plan in place should those things even begin to manifest. That this will be the extent of the damage is my hope, but not, by any means, a guarantee.

Spaz Boys Comedy

Hey, this is not the worst side effect from these head trauma. One that is often seen is heightened aggression and unexplained aggressive bursts which leads to many people that have these problems also having problems with spousal abuse. That is clearly not happening with you, so all in all, i think we should just be happy that you arent more affected than by a bit of bad memory, which is true of many old people.

Miklar Sihn

Honestly I think your memory is pretty good especially in certain instances, like everyone else you do have moments of forgetfulness, but that is easily overshadowed by the knowledge you bring to all your reactions with all the experience you have of a life will lived. I'm told I have a very good memory but there are times where I see you remembering things I had completely forgotten. Not to mention how well you handle when something like that comes up because you make jokes out of it and are able to not get bogged down by something completely out of your control. Also, unlike way too many people nowadays, you know how to have a sense of humor and a damn good one at that, I can't be the only one that genuinely laughs at all of your puns and corny jokes. All those things, coupled with your genuine love for your audience, are a big part of why I think you are the best reactor/commentator around, and certainly my favorite, and that's also why the only consistent patreon I've supported is the Goosh.

Mighty Snake

Don't worry Curtis. None of us were upset, we were just messing with you. We all know you run into memory problems, and even people with perfect memories can't remember all the details of these long-running shounen animes without second watches. Nobody was being serious.

GoldArthur

I completely understand, Curtis. It's like some people forget what you used to do for a living. My uncle used to play football and has the same condition. When I watch long running anime with him, I know he probably won't remember every little detail, so I'm patient and just remind him of stuff when I need to so he isn't confused. That's what all of us should he doing here. C'mon guys.

Imani Brooks

We love you, Curtis! If you ever forget something while I'm watching your videos, I just remember the head trauma. As someone else said, it is part of who you are. No one can change that. I'm sorry you had to explain this.

Morgan

Its gonna be tough to watch one piece then 😔

Kenji

No worries Curtis. love your content. just a little note: it would be nice if people took a minute and checked the comments before commenting the same thing again. like what happened on the bleach video.

Master Zed

im so jealous, you can watch things more then once and have it be like it´s the first time, im gonna get my bat cuz i have alot of things i wanna rewatch! Obviously joking, it can´t be eazy experiencing and living with something like that, i ofc notice it sometimes but i am well awere why your memory can be messed up and when that happens we will help you to piece together everything for you no worries :) Love ya baldy!

Emil Johansson

Also is the memory issue directly related to chair shots specifically or is it a collective of various injuries that you have sustained throughout your career? Just curious.

Gigamac24

Come on, to those people that arent a bit understanding, i think need to take a step back. The man is watching multiple series at once and some with hundreds of episodes and characters at a time. Shit im 23 in good health and i still forget small details here and there. It happens. You don't owe anyone an explanation curtis. Ofcourse, you're only a bald human at the end. Ginger at that.

Curtis, nothing but love, man. I cant speak for anyone else, but I know that getting hit in the head repeatedly with a chair is not good for you. Any wrestling fan knows that. So I always watch your videos knowing full well that you've put your body through hell, and with the utmost respect for that. I have faith that your future will still be bright because you're a fighter with a family and community that loves you. Take it easy and keep gooshing, Big Man.

SlickRob

I dont think people were trying to be malicious with the comments infact most were just stating the same think of just saying who/when you met the character. I think its just that 1 person tries to say "hey you know this guy already this is who he is" but then the next person either doesnt read the comments and has the same idea stating the same thing or thinks curtis might miss that comment or not read it so they put another. But that leads to half the comments being the same thing which could be frustrating. Maybe if everyone would just upvote the original comment or chain anything else they want to say about it to the original comment it wouldnt be such a big deal.

PKKite

There is no excuse for people to be upset with you when youve constantly been referencing the head trauma in the past to the point its almost annoying. But also its good to remind people because it seems THEY cant remember something that is literally part of who you are

No Curtis, you are not allowed to forget ANYTHING! do you have any idea what happens in the anime community when someone forgets about that happened in one out of the 200+ episodes of a series? Hell, I bet you forgot the name of the meowban brothers, two of the most intimidating and powerful enemies in one piece. How dare you have pre-existing conditions that inhibit you from remembering things. I'm leaving the goosh and becoming a train conductor in upstate NY now. Sayonara...

Gigamac24

Little annoyed you have to put this out there, not all memory capacity is equal. Yes not everyone is going to know of your PCS but even without that if you understand the uniqueness and individuality of every single human being you understand the different capacities each possess. Yes it did irk me a little when you didn't remember but I understand how you could of forgotten and thus I wasn't going to come at you about it. For one it wouldn't change your PCS and memory issues, for two it only serves as a negative net gain for all involved and lastly I am here to enjoy your reactions not assess your ability to remember every characters name just by one glance. Keep doing you Curtis, love your content and can't wait for tomorrows reaction.
