Some years back to coincide with the release of one of the films, Togashi actually released a special 2-part chapter called "Kurapika's Memories" depicting his childhood with his best friend prior to the massacre. It's short but it's great for giving further insight into his character, motivations and development (....or maybe I should say deterioration). Every now and then in the anime you'd see glimpses of his original self when he was with Gon, Killua and Leorio; it's just really sad with that additional context in mind. At the end it goes into some gruesome details on how the Troupe killed the villagers (128 of them). Upon reading that I found myself feeling quite sickened and I can't blame Kurapika for wanting vengeance. If a group committed that crime in the real world in the way the Troupe were described to have done it then a lot of people would be demanding the death penalty for them. They do deserve it, it'd be hard to argue against it. Still with that said, I really don't like to see Kurapika suffer and destroy himself. Y'kinda want someone to take the emotional burden off the poor guy and let him find some peace again, he's been through enough.

However, my point was about people seeing certain sentences for crimes as vengeance, rather than justice, simply due to their personal beliefs... As far as vengeance being so consuming that one could never recover from its hold, I disagree. I believe it all lies within the individual.

2020-05-03 14:32:31 +0000 UTCWell I would argue that if someone gets offed via the justice system because that person was judged impartially is very different from hating someone or something for years and destroying it. I would consider that the distinction between justice and revenge. If it’s personal, it’s most likely revenge in my book. Sometimes the two do overlap, but when someone gets completely consumed by hate and thoughts of vengeance and starts hurting bystanders or theirself one way or the other, it becomes purely about revenge. Becoming engulfed by something like that for a long time will most likely mess you up for good. Even getting vengeance won’t help because that makes your reason to live nonexistent and leaves you empty.
