I don't recall if it was mentioned previously, but Headcaptain Genryusai Yamamoto is voiced by Neil Kaplan. Kaplan also played Obito and Madara in Naruto as well as a metric fuckton of other roles in anime, cartoons, and video games.

Chrome is aboustely right, Central 46 is a sort of government, judge, jury and executioner. That said Old Man Yama does come off as abit of an asshole here.

The one thing that always confused me about this fight is Old man Yama mentioning there being previous head captains yet he established the soul reaper academy. So what did they before the academy existed?

Whenever a character in anime powers up so much that they catch on fire, I like to think the fire was just dramatic effect. Like before the fight, they soaked themselves in gas and during their powerup they just light themselves on fire, their yelling is actually them screaming because they're on fire.

So Ukitake and Kyoraku are the first to graduate from the academy and Old man Yamamoto is possibly one of the 1st Soul Reapers. Definitely one of the oldest still alive.

As a quick little note, Isane, the white haired lieutenant from squad 4, is the older sister of Kiyone, the lucky bitch Soi Fon was stepping on. You also may have noticed the boobs when she was getting stepped on. Kiyone, the kid as you call her, is in fact a girl.

Just to build on it, he has access to a shikai and a bankai, while releasing more spiritual pressure than Kenny, we can see that he releases more than Kenny by seeing the reaction Nanao had to Yamamoto's power vs Hanataro, are far weaker character and his reaction to Kenny. Nanao was stunned, lost control of her breathing and crumpled. Hanataro had a hard time moving through it and got exhausted.

Despite the decent amount of asspulls in this arc, i cannot get over how badass the built up moments get! Old man Yama saying his Shikai always sends chills down your spine, which is pretty ironic

It's never specified anywhere in the anime, so I don't count this as a spoiler: The soul reaper academy was established around 2,100 years ago. So a few decades is nothing and Yamamoto is hella old.^^

Just to mention it, Nanao being unable to even really breathe is what happens when the head captain focuses on a Lieutenant, that is what would happen if Renji attempted to fight him. He is a level beyond every other combatant we have seen.

just wanted to clear up a little misconception you may have, Yamamoto may be head captain but he's not the one who decides the laws of Soul Society really, the ones who decided on Rukia's execution were Central 46 who've been brought up briefly before, they're the judges and for the most part generally the ones who create the rules of of soul society. Also just imagine how old the two captains and Yamamoto have to be really, since they were the first 2 captains from his soul reaper academy, I mean Rukia and Renji joined the academy several decades ago when the captains were already well established.
