2020-04-25 21:11:40 +0000 UTCI agree that Ichigo may very well be a reincarnation of Kaien. What happens when a Shinigami (Soul Reaper) dies is that they're reincarnated in the human world, with no memories of their former life. So Ichigo would have 0 memories of Kaien, if it's the case.

The fans wondered about that for a long time. I remember digging through old manga chapters, trying to find some clue. My theory was that Kaien soul was reincarnated into Ichigo. (When you die in Soul Society, you're reincarnated in the human world) However, i will not say if my theory was or wasn't correct. You'll just have to wait and find out what that explanation is, or if there even is one.

2020-04-25 14:19:47 +0000 UTCAs others have already said, Kaien Shiba was the brother of Kukaku and Ganju that was killed by a Shinigami. And for some reason, Ichigo looks just like him. Though this brings up the question of why Gangu and Kukaku never mention that Ichigo is the spitting image of their dead brother.
