The Principal suffered a failure in his first student, and resolved to ensure nothing of the sort happened again by raising students who wouldnt' break under that pressure, even if it meant trampling on others to do so. Korosensei failed to saved Aguri, and one of the first things he studied with his tentacles was using them to save someone. In the manga, he was confident he could repair the students even if they were blown apart entirely which is kinda insane.
