The thing with anime is that it has other cliches and structures than western tv. The same goes for cliches and structures between types of anime, so it really does start out more varied, but when you have watched enough series of each style you begin to see the structures. At that point there are things anime does better than western media and other things it does worse.

Well, I apparently had a blackout or something since I never saw you started doing this series. Just downloading and about to watch episode 1 now, so I don't know your thoughts on the series, but I watched this as it aired years ago and I'm not ashamed to say, despite the target audience being female, I as a male truly enjoyed and still do enjoy this show, one of the better comedy anime out there.

I'm so glad you're continuing to enjoy this series. It's definitely one of my favorites, and Haruhi is one of my favorite main protagonists of all time! But to be honest, there are a few episodes throughout that have always felt a little dry to me, and this is one of them. (Kind of unfortunate, as it's only the second episode, for anyone who's still on the fence at this point and might be turned away by it.) All these characters are so great though. Episode 4 introduces one of my favorites, and episode 5 starts looking into the first of the hosts' backstories... There are some really great stories ahead of you.

So many memories coming back. This was one of my first anime. Me and my brother used to watch this, and Fruits Basket together. This is honestly one of the best anime to start with if you're getting into shojou. It's almost a microcosm of the whole genre.

Yea, it REALLY does a great job of being over the top fun, kinda silly and yet still makes the relationships very interesting! :-)

god this show brings back so many memories, the relationships are really cute, also it has a really fun sense of humor, Glad I chose this as the first Shoujo series to show you, since it has a more self aware sense of humor to itself and can poke fun at some of the cliches of the genre it's a great starting point. I recognize so many of the voices as well, Tamaki as Edward from FMA, Hikaru one of the twins is Natsu in fairy tail, and Kyoya the one with black hair is Sebastian in Black Butler.
