I think basically Uryū (Quincy) Is trying to prove via who was suited better for eliminating hollows, and that the Soul Society Soul Reapers were wrong in killing the quinces and his master. His wording sounds to be that his master died. His hollow bait was not meant for this many hollows, something else is bringing more, and he is worried but will cut his hands to the bone to try and fix it while getting some licks in on soul reapers. I feel his past wounds have blinded him a little tho.

Redemption

I'm pretty sure Uryu actually meant it when he said he wouldn't let any innocents get hurt. The thing is, he might not know for sure if something went wrong. He pretty much used some bait to attract some deer, but wound up attracting every bear within 50 miles. You just don't expect that many bears to show up when hunting deer. Is he a bit of a dick? Hell yeah. But he's a dick that made a mistake.
