I couldn't help but laugh, every time Curtis shipped Guts and Casca, probably the best build up

Curtis, you're right that Griffith wants the kingdom and the best way through is the princess. However, he wouldn't do something like sneak into the princess' room and risk getting caught. He let Guts' departure affect him too much and because of this, made one hell of a mistake and let his emotions get the better of him.

idk why people shit talk the 1997 anime. a lot of people say "dont even watch it, just read the manga" but I think the 1997 is the perfect introduction to berserk.

Yeah I think he partly wanted to prove that he didnt need guts. His inner monologue during the duel even said "i was fine before him and ill be fine after him". While the objective was to always become king through the princess after raising his status, he ended up jumping the gun and tried rushing things along because he was just in a bad headspace after losing guts.

And Guts manages to do something that not even harem anime protagonists are able to do. Actually sleep with the girl. Onscreen no less. I mean sure it was a still frame, but at least it wasn't that "cut to the next scene and they're lying in bed together" shit.

I’ve never seen the anime for berserk but I’m really impressed it’s really good and doesn’t leave as much out as I thought it might.
