I actually really liked the still images lol, maybe it's because I enjoyed the manga so much, but yeah I think it was used to cut cost back then during the production

2019-11-07 04:04:35 +0000 UTCI just want to clear up something about Guts not wanting to be touched that the anime doesn't really go into. Guts was raped as a child. this is something that they never explicitly state in the anime, but it is made clear in the manga. Its a big part of his character.

So we're seeing how the young Mercenary Guts became the Black Swordsman. Hopefully I've explained it in a way that doesn't really spoil anything. I know the sudden switch between the two points in time, can be confusing for new viewers of the series.
