It'd be a shame to bring down Kira and then spend the rest of your life in jail. Do you know what they do to former cops in prison? It's not pretty.

Well Japan has basically never even heard of it, getting and using a gun as a civillian in Japan is a lot lot harder than in the states. That probably did a lot for them not thinking he was armed, since it would be quite unthinkable that he would be. That being said, yeah, they f***d up big time. That was lame. I guess they werent really prepared on how to handle it.
