Higuchi clearly doesn't think much of how people perceive him. When he picked up Misa, to the casual observer it would've looked like some guy picking up a hooker in a nurse uniform.

Remember she is being compared to L who is a super genious and Light who is gifted for his age. But we all know Matsuda is the true hero of the story.
