Well, it's not like Luffy was abandoning Chopper. He fully intended to get him back in the next round.

In the manga, Shelly was simply wounded by Foxy while the anime changed it to Foxy capturing her, hence why Luffy picked her here and not in the manga.

Like Samuel and Carsten said earlier the next few episodes are filler and in manga Luffy actually chose Chopper. The 3rd fight was supposed to be 1v1 Captain match and if they chose Foxy as a 2nd round reward, it would have been auto win to Straw Hats, but no one wanted to have Foxy on their crew, so they just took Chopper back.

Just so you know, the end here was already filler. Shelly is not part of the Foxy pirates and can therefore not be chosen. Luffy brought Chopper back and the final match begun (which comes after the filler, I believe). This is such a violation of Luffy's character, I always hated it. Yes, he's a goof, but when it comes to crew and family, he is dead serious.

An enter filler, maybe I missed something but it doesnt really make sense to me but whatever. In the manga the final match was decided already and Capn Foxy was part of the team and without him, well the strawhat'd win no prob but here they changed it since I suppose this arc is very friendly for adding more stuff. Basically, if they chose Capn Foxy they would take Chopper after the next round and that would be it. Gotta love how they screamed about it being unfair when they did the same thing xD Chopper was supposed to be in round 2 and they took him xD "No one has ever used this horrendous strategy before in the long history of Davy Back Fight" And yet the strategy has a well-known name? Seems legit. Now I guess we're gonna get some filler. Which is fine except for when they undermine, go against or change the main narrative😡 But this is fun and games so if ever I guess this is the place? How could he take back Shelly btw when Shelly wasnt a part of Foxys crew? Thats what I mean doesnt make sense, its weird. Shelly was never theirs so how could he take him back (unless the anime changed something here). In the manga they just took Chopper back here after round 2. In the manga this arc was shorter but I dont know whats gonna happen now.

Honestly I dont see them beating the other guys down if they lose. Honor and stuff, they made this stuff clear. If they were gonna say f** this shit and get out they already would have done so I think. Maybe Im wrong. But I dont see the strawhats turning to violance after losing the game (well not really fair and square but honestly they should just have walked away when they realized the other guys were cheating). What I mean to say is, they are still playing the game. If they were gonna go against playing they should have already bailed out and beaten the shit out of opposers if they got in the way of the whole crew leaving. Cheaters as they may be its a game with risks, keep playing and having the others risk something if youre just gonna say screw it and take back whatever you lost at the end when the other side was risking losing their crew, same as you... I cant say that would be in line with the way I regard the strawhats. Arent they really good people? Would they really do that? Not to say they would just give up in their crewmates if they lose but I dont think resorting to force to take'em back is a real options for them with the way they are. *as you could see the Foxy pirates were fully willing to give up whichever crewmember was chosen

Nah, Luffy's character would never allow him to just beat the crap out of everyone if his team loses the game. Cause that would shame and dishonor him as a pirate. Hell, that's also why Zoro told Chopper to stop crying when he was taken.
