The One Piece world is unfortunately very black and white when it comes to those who sail the seas. You are either Marine (with no freedom) or Pirate (no matter what you do). +Luffy always wanted to be the Pirate King, so of course he'll fly the Jolly Roger. And his crew (nakamas) are of the same mentality that freedom to do whatever they want is best.

Just a reminder that ~technically~ the Marines are the good guys and Pirates are the bad guys. The vast majority of the Navy are "good" like Smoker, Coby and Garp (the old guy that's mentoring Coby), but there are plenty of corrupt members as well. The vast majority (and I do mean VAST majority) of pirates are about as evil as you can get (like Crocodile and Arlong). The Straw Hats are just weird and are barely even pirates if you think about it (they haven't really done any piratey things in all of these 127+ episodes other than punching some corrupt Navy officer).

As someone stated, in the manga he actually says ''tell them to eat shit'' if I remember correctly, which makes that scene even more epic IMO.

The translation is similar, but he actually said for them to eat shit. I don't think they could put that in the subtitles here. But the sentiment is the same.

Just to point out something with the subtitles, since a few of them do this with Hina. When Hina says something that says "I'm disappointed" she is actually just saying "Hina disappointed", that along with referring to Smoker as Smoker-kun is her vebal tic of talking like a child lol
