I disagree. They have very similar meanings. Just because the word "friend" has been diluted over the years doesn't mean it wasn't originally suppose to mean the same thing as nakama.

it annoys me that they translating it as "friends" it s not,it s nakama, i find it kind of cringy when they say "it s because you re my friend" doesn t hold the same meaning

Never smile at a crocodile No, you can't get friendly with a crocodile Don't be taken in by his welcome grin He's imagining how well you'd fit within his skin Never smile at a crocodile Never tip your hat and stop to talk awhile Never run, walk away, say good-night, not good-day Clear the aisle but never smile at Mister Crocodile You may very well be well bred Lots of etiquette in your head But there's always some special case, time or place To forget etiquette For instance Never smile at a crocodile No, you can't get friendly with a crocodile Don't be taken in by his welcome grin He's imagining how well you'd fit within his skin Never smile at a crocodile Never dip your hat and stop to talk awhile Never run, walk away, say good-night, not good-day Clear the aisle but never smile at Mister Crocodile

A thing to really take note of here is the true meaning of what Luffys words actually mean. For starters, there are some subtitles errors here and there, Im pretty sure Luffys line is actually "We're Friends/Nakama", not thats how friends are. And the thing Crocodile doesnt understand at all is what actually drives Luffy and the strawhats because he only cares about himself, the baroque works clearly show he doesnt care for anyone and is merely using his own people, all expendable. The thing is, Luffy doesnt really need to survive either. I mean its a plus for sure if they survive but thats not what its about. If you think that you can tell them they might as well quit as they are going to die then you havent understood what theyre doing. Luffy and at the very least most of the straw hats are willing to die to help Vivi save her country. If he dies or not is not the point. Its a secondary concern. The only thing in his mind is to defeat Crocodile. And whether they die or not, if they stop Crocodile and his plans its their victory. Crocodile obviously need to survive to for his plans to have meaning, but as the strawhats are fighting for someone else they dont need to make it out alive. Luffys line "If we die, we die" is a cool oneliner for sure but it also differs from standard ones because Luffy 100% means that. He is fully prepared to die at any given moment and his living or dying isnt what its about. "You dont understand anything".

One piece has officially changed in terms of dimensions. We now talking characters dying, coups and secret organisations

The amount of backup plans crocodile has is incredible. He planted baroque works members in both armies just to prevent vivi and Koza from meeting. He used a bomb which had a timer that would still blow up even if the cannoneers were beaten. He even has a hidden poisonous hook just for situations where his sand doesn’t work. His preparations and caution is incredible

I think you should word it differently then, because the standalone moment is amazing ,
