Nami's character grows on you as she develops throughout the story. Robin's character is more or less consistent throughout, with a few huge moments thrown in here and there.

People die all the time in One Piece, just not a lot of major characters. Also, take solice in the fact that the priest Chopper is facing is by far the dumbest priest, as he apparently can't seem to figure out how to do basic human functions.

Nami is kind of like a more fleshed out, active and involved Chichi from Dragon Ball - she can be a nag and she can be annoying but because she plays an active role in the plot instead of just being the main characters wife her postive traits tend to outweight her negative ones.
