I'm getting Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu vibes from this Anime. I already love it. Gonna start watching it on my own. Also yeah Mariko is a bitch but if you look at the way her mother treats Kaoru, she comes by it honestly.

Other artists to look forward to in this anime is Bill Evans and John Coltrane from my immediate knowledge. I haven't watched this anime in a while, and it is classified as a Shojo anime, but I watched this anime as it originally aired. It is also noteworthy, although I don't think you have this connection yet, but Yoko Kanno did the music arrangements for this series and she is known for her original work on the show Cowboy Bebop.
