Yu Yu Hakusho is one of, if not my very favorite anime of all time. But God damn I always forget how hard it can be at time to watch Yusuke and co take such brutal beatings. Obviously nothing new to the genre but Yu Yu has to rank up there with DBZ as one of the classic shounen anime with some of the most thorough ass kickings. Made all the worse I think because of the characters ages. Same with HunterXHunter, it’s one thing to watch a character you like catch some hands, but when the character is so young it can get downright uncomfortable watch. Yusuke’s shear desperation to stop Toguro combined with the amount of pain, both physical and emotional, this 15 year old boy is going through is just brutal to sit through.

That is the really cool thing about this power up that makes it stand out. Yusuke has shown his anger a lot in the series. After all, he's a street punk that comes from a broken home and brushes it off by having this macho bravado, smarm, and anger being his prevailing outside emotions. But here the barrier between Yusuke and his REAL emotions is broken and we see the overwhelming sadness that the loss of both his teacher and his best friend have caused. That's the energy going into this final confrontation and it's so different from most shounen that have come before and after it.

One part of this episode that I really like is the short sequence of Yusuke and Keiko. It doesn't show much, heck, it doesn't really explain itself (not that things need to), but it shows their friendship. When Yusuke got up and was crying over Kuwabara, he did not call Kuwabara his best friend. We may think Kuwabara and Yusuke have a great camaraderie, but his best friend is still Keiko.

I always loved that in this case it’s not anger or rage that unlocks his power like so many other moments this and other anime, but it’s allowing himself to feel legitimate sadness that’s the key. It really makes this moment stand out.

I wouldn't say that. There are many that consider the Dark Tournament to be the climax of Yu Yu Hakusho. That's not say that the later stuff isn't also very good, but I'd disagree with the idea that it's better.

This arc is amazing and all and i liked everything it offered and i really enjoyed it alot, and now i'm looking forward to your reaction on the next arc. I might be in the minority here, but next arc is my favorite in the series !
