If I had to say one thing about Hiei. It's that Kurama is probably the only person he truly respects. You can make the argument that he grudgingly respects Yusuke. But the key word there is grudgingly. Yusuke had to defeat Hiei just earn said grudging respect. Whereas Kurama earned it just based on Hiei seeing him in action.

I like how the show didn’t go out of the way to explain what Hiei did and why he did it. It showed enough clues in the scene without blurting it out to allow us to figure out what he was doing without having him explain it afterwards like Naruto would do. I also note that if this were HXH the narrator woulda explained all that thus breaking the Show, don’t tell rule, here.

You'll come to really like Hiei as time goes on, I believe. Not here to spoil anything, just an early observation. He's very much a "Vegeta-like" character, and, like Vegeta, my favorite. I'm really enjoying your reactions to this, kinda like watching it with a good friend. Keep it up :)

So regarding the beasts, they are based in the Sì Xiàng of Chinese Mythology (and I think Japanese as well). I will be going by their Japanese names however. The first two we will see Yusuke and Co. fight is Genbu the Black Turtle of the North who Kurama just killed and next is Byakko, the White Tiger of the West. Afterwards, this leave us the Azure Dragon of the East and Vermillion Bird of the South. You'll get those names later.

Hiei reminds me of vegeta from dragon ball.

With Hiei at the Gate of Betrayal it made sense to try and get info out of the eyeball and then pull the lever, since the whole point of that is to betray the people getting crushed and saving them will come with consequences, which was the giant boulder crushing him, if he didn't find out the info from the eyeball.
