CAPTAIN SMOKER IS KINDA CONFUSING TO ME! - One Piece #48

I guess maybe I should mention. The whole connection between Smoker and Gold Roger is filler, so dont take it as too meaningfull since it wont help explain his character, since it wasnt even there in the canon material. A negative thing with the One Piece anime is that certain parts of filler actually contradict canon... But if its relevant I guess someone can bring it up. For example, the part about the flashbacks of Roger where also anime only, and some of it doesnt click all that well with things that will be brought up later, but no big deal, its fine to just think of it as being like this

That bar scene was a nice addition, but they messed one thing up with it. Luffy does drink alcohol. Just not often. As for Smoker, I think it's just more over that he respected Roger himself, but he's seen enough of the other scumbag pirates that he doesn't trust them as a whole.

In case you didn't notice, when zoro saw that swordsman girl, the reason he got so surprised and crushed her glasses is because she looks exactly like kuina, his childhood friend and rival who died.

Smoker is one of my favorite marines. I have 3 of them. But early on smoker has been on of my favorite characters.

I love Smoker so much! He's one of my Favorite One Piece characters hands down!

Friendly reminder that the Navy are technically the good guys. The only reason you root against them is because the Straw Hats are pirates and pirates are supposed to be bad guys. There are corrupt people in the Navy, just like there are good pirates.

Luffy is an odd pirate. He seems to only care about having a good time. It just so happens a good time to him is carefree adventure with his friends. Just don't hurt his friends or try to take away their freedom and you'll have a good time

Smoker unlike many of the Marines and Navy officers you have met so far (aside from Nami's mother) is an actual good person who isn't as corrupt as Morgan or that rat face guy in the Arlong arc.

I’ve seen this episode at least 2 dozen times and I only just realized when smoker is walking, specifically the bar scene, the smoke moves with him as if it’s part of his body. Likes smoke is actually a part of smoker hah!

You'll see more of it later on in the series, but there's a strong underlying theme of respect for those who are strong both physically and in terms of character/convictions in the One Piece world, even among enemies.

Smoker is a cool dude and his introduction here is done really well. You get to learn that he's kind, strong, and has an immense respect for Gold Roger despite being a marine. And all that makes him a super interesting character.

Captain Smoker is the most interesting marine to date in my opinion. Without giving too much away, let's just say he will have a really cool involvement with the Straw Hats going forward.

Smoker is my favorite character out of the marines.

Word of advice, don't look at everything as a black and white thing. Someone who might seem bad just because of who they are and what they do, doesn't mean that its the reality. They're are bad people everywhere in all points of life, its those bad people that give the good people a bad name. You're seeing the reverse of that in Smoker, and if you think about it Luffy as well.

Yeah the show mostly just showed the corrupt marines. Smoker is the first marine with a high position that embodies what the marines truly are in the One Piece world. Even if you see Luffy and the gang being heroes you have to remember to the world marines are the good guys and pirates are bad. You’ve just been seeing the exception up to this point. With the corrupt marines and the nice straw hats.

Okay Smoker is doing his job pirates aren't the good guys they do a lot of bad things as you seen apart from Luffy and his crew they aren't an exception there pirates regardless so these Marines keep the peace and protect people not all Marines are like the ones we've seen so far they are some that are actually decent

Smoker really shows that all marines are bad actually do their job. The same goes for not all pirates or at least most pirates are not the straw hats
