“KOMUGI, ARE YOU STILL HERE?” - Hunter X Hunter #135

Comments

video dosnt work for me my favorite eps to

Samuel Avetisyan

Read the manga first and this scene was gut wrenching then and its still gut wrenching now so sad not even the main characters and still so invested such good writing I can't even put it into words

Tony Gilbert King

Curtis. It is such a privilege to be here.

Ecktor

Might be my favorite episode.

I like how Netero died for mankind and the glory of the human race just like an ant would, and Meruem died in the arms of a loved on like a human.

stiropor

And this right here is way Meruem and Komugi are two of my favorite anime characters of all time. Unfortunately, none of the episodes after this really measure up.

grant pflum

Interesting take, although some would argue that more love goes around in poor families than in middle class or rich families. Id say a bigger indicator for her not ever being loved, is when she started crying because she was considered "a valued (honored) guest" and he did not let her get killed by that bird.

Jojoekage

Actually, I started writing stories way back when I was in elementary school. I always loved storytelling! I think it's actually a case of my love of storytelling helped me in my wrestling career. :-)

Spaz Boys Comedy

tear up im not even an emotional guy and I had tears streaming down my face I was even more speechless then Curtis and he barly had an outro this hit me harder then fmab hues's funeral "stop putting dirt on daddy" line which I didn't think was possible just wow is all I could say after watching this just wow

Only Hunter x Hunter can make a love story amazing, with absolutely no romance involved. I still tear up to this episode even after rewatching this arc so many times. Best episode of the series imo, and easily the best 'Villain' in any anime i have seen

Heisenberg101

Curtis, if you don’t mind me asking, do you (or have you) considered that your knack for storytelling, and your appreciation of good storytelling has anything to do with being a wrestler? Some of my favorite storytellers (Jake, Roddy, Dusty, Flair) weren’t just good between the ropes, they knew how to weave a story through their actions. Sorry if i’m Barking up the wrong tree, I just wanted to know how you felt about it. (P.S. there’s at least a few of us who’d love to see you react to some wrestling once in a while!)

Anthony Corvello

Hey, thanks again. I just wanted to say, i’d Probably never watched this if it weren’t for you and chat. Carry on and thanks again. 👍

Anthony Corvello

I remember crying while reading this part in the manga, then crying all over again when I saw it in the anime. Manly tears.

:(

This should be something aroung the 8th tmie I've watched this anime (3 times this year, now), and I still loose my shit and cry rivers at episodes like this one.

I haven't seen Curtis this emotional since Naruto saying goodbye to Minato. What a phenomenal episode this was!

It amazed me that I found myself reacting to that with a brief pang of sympathy. You guys know me; typically in a situation like that, with a character I hated, I'd be like "Bye, bitch!"... But for some reason, I didn't feel all that satisfied at all about Pouf's death.

Spaz Boys Comedy

What i love so much about hxh is that it flips the script for typical shounen arcs. The protagonist loses his humanity, and the villian finds his humanity.

The next one broke me.

xBlazing Gigs

When you think about it in her her whole life Meruem was probably the only person who ever showed her any kind of affection. I mean she did state she came from a large family who were poor (which usually means there's very little love to go around, especially when you consider she was born blind and would've been a burden on them), then her talent for Gungi was discovered making her the primary breadwinner. But still she would not have been loved, just valued the same way someone might prize a golden goose. Then there's the fact that she'd never been defeated which would've made her hated among her peers (other Gungi players), the people she should've had kinship with. Mereum was the only one who truly felt a positive emotional attachment with her. So of course she'd choose to stay by his side in his final moments, even if it did mean her own slow and certain death.

Phillip Ribbink

131 is still my favorite episode of the series, 135 is very emotional but I resonated more with Gon's pain. Also even though Pouf was an absolute piece of shit, the shot of him just... alone and dead on the ground because he crash landed and bled out, his clothes just flapping in the wind. There is something about that I find incredibly haunting.

Caffeinated King

Yoshihiro Togashi was a genius when he wrote this arc.

Meruem and Komugis relationship is honestly better than Romeo and Juliet

Jamir Dixon

Try not to cry, cry everytime, i dont know how many more times itll take of me watching this to not cry

Nate D.

I cried once again, everytime i see this

You know that thing on the end on Meruem's tail? Yeah that's what went through my feels this episode.

Mighty Snake

Thats so cool. I never knew that.

Jojoekage

It's during this arc especially that we see Naoko Takeuchi's (HxH's author's wife) influence in certain characters and scenes. The author, Yoshihiro Togashi, had to take long hiatuses (some were months long) during this and later arcs due to health issues, and his wife helped a lot with the manga. If memory serves, her artistic influence even extended into some of the character designs like Pouf, Komugi, and the small forms of Pouf and Youpi.

Cetacean Needed

When I cried to this, I wasn't even 100% sure if I was crying the first time I saw it with my mom. If you asked me in the moment I'm sure I would have been aware I was, but, I was so overwhelmed by multiple different emotions pulling me in every direction. I was rendered speechless and utterly incapable of thinking. It's transcendent.

Yes! I immediately thought he likely went blind too and/or the lighting conditions made it pointless to keep his eyes open. This was so poetic and heartbreaking.

Within the broader anime artstyle, eyes generally have spots of white on them. Like this: https://i.imgur.com/E02POSB.png These spots are essentially the "lights within their eyes." They serve to create the illusion that the eyes are shining, since our eyes naturally reflect light due to being perpetually wet. But sometimes, the eyes are drawn without these lights. Like this: https://i.imgur.com/W9qr3pL.png They are drawn like this under 3 cases. 1. The person is emotionally numb 2. The person is dead 3. The person is blind You can see that nearly every character within HxH have these spots. Gon does, Meruem does, 99% of the cast does. If a character is particularly cartoony in style, they might not. You can also see that Gon DOES NOT have those spots several times during his confrontation with Pitou, especially after his transformation. He had gone emotionally numb. Another character who doesn't have the spots is Komugi, since she is blind. But... towards the end, when she was crying. She was still blind, she could not see. She was dying from the rose's kiss. But despite that, with her tears shining, her eyes looked truly alive and happy for the first time in her life. Rest in peace, Komugi. The most important character of HxH. A frail, dimwitted, blind girl with a perpetually runny nose, who only possessed a single talent. You changed the heart of a tyrant and saved the world.

Scryehard

screw that If I ever get asked to name a child..not my own ofcourse ill give the First Name Niku and their Middle one Be Hikari....sounds Badass right?....it means Flesh-Light in Japanese...

Meelog Malterion

Rest in peace 😢💔

Soulley

Meruem is imo the best antagonist in anime and one of my top 5 characters in the show

Ladies and gentlemen...we gottem

WHOLESOME DEUS

I shall name my future daughter Komugi and ask her “Will you hold my hand?” 👨‍👧

Dragon ball was a oneshot Issue but Toriyama got so many letters he was forced to do the Pilaf Saga and by that point there was no turning back

Meelog Malterion

i feel like the king guessed that pitou died?? without any explicit info?

astherphoenixxx96

No reasonable human would fault you for that.

Jojoekage

Togashi to Shounen jump: "May I have some place to publish my generic and predictable battle shounen ?" "To publish a generic and predictable battle shounen ?" "Yeeeeeeees" *actually creates a fucking masterpiece like Boss"

Jojoekage

Hell no that's some traumatic shit. Lol I watched that with my girl was not prepared for her waterworks and my silent aaaaah fuuuuuucccckkk

Sean Nelson

Curtis got through it without tearing up TOO much~

Nezu Mikey

Can't even say these are manly tears. Just tears. Very few shows cause me to legitimately cry, and this made me do it again.

And you have received the HxH punch to the emotional dick that is the Ant arc.

Sean Nelson

:-D

Spaz Boys Comedy

i have watched so many anime thoughout the years, this is the first time i cried tears of satisfaction. kinda sealed hxh as my all time top 1 anime

astherphoenixxx96

Yea, it actually gave me a jump scare... You'd think they could have transitioned into that a little smoother. :-D

Spaz Boys Comedy

You hear them play and Meruem sounds really tired and keeps asking if Komugi is still there presumably because he went either blind or hes too weak to open his eyes, but most importantly, because hes afraid of dying alone. If youve ever worked at a hospital or talked with somebody shortly before their death, You'd know how absolutely frightening dying is, and even more so dying alone. And of course finally, he says hes tired and he'll take a nap. But we all know he well never wake up again. His last wish is for her to hold his hand and to say his name one last time. "Good night Meruem, Ill be joining you soon" 😭 Romeo and Juliette is shit in comparison.

Serra Lear

Why are we still here ? Just to cry ?

Jojoekage

https://i.redd.it/a45ofctbm4kz.jpg also a cute little picture of what could have been if things had played out differently

Serra Lear

Gah, that Next Episode preview music is always so jarring after all that sad.

Serra Lear

Yup, I saw it last time you posted it.

Spaz Boys Comedy

Yes! That's one always got me! Pouf died alone, seeing his blood's trace, obviously he was struggle a lot before he died and he cried. If I'm not wrong, the way he tried to go when struggling it was where Meruem go.

Hisoka Morrow

I love how the floot starts playing when Palm cries. And than it goes straight to Poufs corpse.

Jojoekage

Even I did pasted this one about 2 days ago, but please allow me to do this again since it suppose to be on this video. THE SUPER ANALYSIS AND CONCLUSION from the guy called "Guy Bruh" here, READ IT PLEASE, it's worthy of your precious time. Guy Bruh Kokoriko is an advanced Gungi technique invented by Komugi that centers around isolating the King (as in the Gungi piece, not the Chimera Ant King, obviously), separating it from the other pieces and killing it off. Just like Netero and the Hunters were planning to do to Meruem. However, Komugi unexpectedly develops a counter to this technique in the middle of a game, meaning that the King piece (representing Meruem) no longer has to die (since he unexpectedly survived the nuke, Miniature Rose). Then, later on, when Komugi uses Kokoriko again, she actually develops a counter to the counter ("she reversed my reversal???"), representing that the King piece (Meruem) apparently actually does have to die after all (because of the Miniature Rose's poison). However, immediately after beating Meruem using Kokoriko (symbolizing his imminent death), Komugi and Meruem start one final game together, a game that they never finish. Immediately afterwards, they die together, leaving on the board Meruem's one black piece and Komugi's single white piece, together in Gungi forever. This represents that the two were always united through Gungi, and will continue to be together even after death, undisturbed and united for all eternity. Meruem places his piece down, symbolizing his death, and then Komugi responds by placing her piece down next to his, showing that she is perfectly willing to die at his side. The black screen where we could only see Meruem's "aura particles" and everything else was dark shows that the Rose's poison has made Meruem go blind. That's why he has to keep asking Komugi if she's still there, because he can't see her anymore (honestly, it broke my heart everytime he asked her that). This is ironic because his name means "the light that illuminates/shines upon all". In addition, as they are playing in the bunker before their deaths, Meruem sees a blinding light radiating from Komugi as she "reverses his reversal", making her "the light that illuminates even the all-powerful light". Despite being far weaker (and ironically blind as well), her light shined far brighter than his. Then, as he dies, Komugi holds him and feels his face, allowing her to finally "see" or know what his face is like. Thus, as they die, Meruem joins Komugi in blindness as she joins him in death. Meruem can finally see what Komugi has been seeing all along, and knows what it feels like to be blind like her, and Komugi finally knows his face, allowing each to understand the other more as they fade away. Even the OST that played during their death scene means "Understanding". Touching, isn't it? Togashi really is a mastermind, and this entire story, especially this arc, is a beautiful work of art. Depicting love, hatred, innocence, corruption, happiness, suffering, loyalty, betrayal, anger, sadness, life, death, malevolence, destruction, resolve, determination, avarice, sacrifice, "true" power, truth, and understanding. Like seriously I already thought Hunter x Hunter to be an excellently written Anime but still I expected nothing of whatever happened in this arc, I was in awe with my mouth open wide after it ended. I was like "is it the same anime!?". https://aminoapps.com/c/anime/page/blog/the-true-meaning-behind-meruem-and-komugis-final-gungi-game/2gtN_uxR5g3j53RgGn1agqneK1EZmq

Palms struggle also made me tear up. Her panicing when the king tried to bent the knee. Even thought he is THE enemy.

Jojoekage

Yeah, you can ditch the "almost" part.

Man we can't seem to get you crying like a baby! Once we get a poll to do a 50 episode series, I'll be throwing Clannad in there! Hahah. Good reaction nevertheless.

Enzonator

I almost cried seeing this again..

Akettaja The Finnish Moron

Yes you are.

Jojoekage

Well he always said "Do not make me repeat myself again" all the times, then he said "I shall repeat myself again". RESPECT TO MERUEM.

Hisoka Morrow

"Are you still here" 😭 Why. Why is our potential for malice infinite.

Jojoekage

Hear we go!

Hisoka Morrow

I'm not gonna cry

Matt Smith

I'm tearing up already!

It's finally here

L3GEND

Omg I can't wait to watch it!
