I do hope that someone recommends him to watch Cowboy Bebop. If he really likes being pulled into not only the story but the setting of a series that is one he definitely can't miss.

For the era duels to the death between masters/students of Kenjutsu schools and outsider challengers wasn't unheard of. But I don't think I've ever heard of a duel to the death between a Master and Student from the same school. Also you'd think Mugen would've learned his lesson. After the last time that a woman made eyes at him. (Being nearly poisoned to death is as good a reason to be paranoid of the opposite sex as anything). Hell now that I think about it I can't think of a Samurai Manga/Anime I've seen where a woman of let's call it loose morals coming onto the protagonist ever ended well.

The funny thing is we really dont know ANYTHING about the gang. Jin we now know was a student to a unbeaten teacher who he killed also explains how he is so good at fighting, Mugen grew up in one of the roughest places in Japan thus his street attitude and fighting style, and Fu as far as we know had a missing Dad at a young age and her mom died later. She was just working at a diner without a good reason to look for the sunflower samurai. But when the store got destroyed and those two owed her a debt she now had a reason and two body guards to help search.
