It is easy to forget, but Ainz n crew are not protagonists. Ainz is simply the main character, and Overlord is the story about how everyone, including himself, perceives him

She is apparently also Akame (ga Kill), Elizabeth/Liz (7DS), Miia (Monsu) and main heroine from killing bites... Huh, didn't know any of that.

I think it's mostly due to Ainz simply fucking up people who one would normally consider to be 'the bad guys' that makes you be somewhat sympathetic towards him and his group. However, at this point and as the series goes on, the show starts to look at things from a different POV, a pov from the eyes of those he seeks to use, hence you will slowly start to see him and the Nazarik group in a different light

Well Overlord if stripped down to it's barest description is the story of a gamer who sets out to become a world conqueror. Such characters are usually very hard to make sympathetic. The author of Overlord did a good job of introducing us to Ainz in a way that made him sympathetic. Namely having him be on the side of those you would traditionally consider to be the good guys. Now that that sympathy is established, we're taking a step back from his perspective. And seeing how his actions will affect those he sets out to conquer. Hence the Lizardmen arc.
