The royal guards would never 'oppose' the king, because he is the only one they care about. They are just so loyal to him that sometimes they might make choices for him which they think is beneficial for him, even though he might not like it himself, like a parent protecting and taking care of their child. and if the king wanted them dead they would probably gladly kill themselves

With what happened with Kimugi (the gungi player) the King unknowingly grew attached to his gungi rival. As he played with her he grew attached to her and unknowingly bonded with her. By the time he got to where he decided to kill her he found himself hesitating. Once he saw her in actual danger however he, without thinking about it swooped in and killed her attacker. Next thing he knows he’s calling her his special guest and he can’t bring himself to kill her. He formed a bond with her and now he can’t bring himself to end it.

Regardless of what he's feeling in the moment, never forget that the king is a pure chimera ant. He doesn't know what it really means to be human, and you can see that clearly as he talks about the people he killed. Right now the king is like a child who's never been challenged his whole life, only to be given a nearly unstoppable obstacle, and he loves that.

Poufs devotion is unprecedented in all of anime. He was so upset that he almost insulted the king by killing the girl, because he would never be able to beat her at Gungi, that he cried and decided to commit suicide as soon as the King is done with conquering the world. O__O

On a great scale, the King couldn't decide between two things that are world-altering. The heart knows what it wants, but environment, resolve, and doubt cloud its judgment. It is like when you can't choose something on a menu, but as soon as somebody picks for you, you realized that the option of losing something you truly wanted helped you decide what it ultimately was. It's similar with Meruem, as he can't decide between having more meaning through his own power, or through relationships. I don't know if it would interest you to react to, similar to Nux and Swagkage, but Aleczandxr makes thematic analysis videos that help explain the genius under the fascination that we have with the entertainment.

It's like a really weird reversal of Stockholm syndrome. Only instead of the victim (Gungi girl) feeling affection towards her captor (though that is present as well) her Captor the King is starting to develop affection towards his captive.

I get shivers every time I see this episode, the way that the kings world comes crashing down when he realises that he doesn't know him name is fantastic

This is one of my all time Favorite Characters arcs in anime. I still like Goku’s Saiyan Heritage acceptance arc a little more but I do put this above Vegeta’s character arc in the Buu saga.

Komungi and the King's relationship is odd here. It's almost semi-romantic but then he's a giant bug monster, she's a small girl. It is so weird but also fascinating.
