I was looking at Trunk's form as being something like what Gohan went through VS Cell, since he was also SSJ with blue lightening (SSJ2). Though it seems like his encounter with Super Saiyan Blue has had an influence on him. It was alluded to a few times in DBZ that the Half Saiyans might have an extra advantage in terms of huge jumps in potential power. Gohan being the most extreme case of this. Though it was never really delved into much.

One would say that in either set of events all the Earthlings would have died however in the current/future timeline not only would all the humans would have died but also several other planets full of people too.

Yea, Curtis this form has never been properly explained in canon. There are plenty of theories about it but those are just theories leaving this form with a name but no real explanation about the form itself.

This form is known as super saiyan ikari which is a Japanese word for, rage, anger wrathful you get the picture 😂 it's super dope

its not *as much* of an ass-pull if you connect this transformation with SSJ3. Maybe its come kind of variant, or perfected form? Gotenks (half Trunks) learned SSJ3 just by watching Goku. Future Trunks has now seen the same. Maybe that's where he learned it.

So I guess the full explanation of this, Story TL Zamasu goes and does the shit, meets up with Trunks timeline Zamasu, does the shit. Raw dogged it on while Goku in main story line got beerus to destroy story timeline Zamasu, this act made two separate timelines. Goku black really is the Story TL zamasu, but the story time line just shifted to a new timeline.

So, my understanding of the timeline is that when Beerus destroyed the original timeline Zamasu, that made a split in the timelines, so there's now one where the world goes to shit because of Zamasu, and one where everything is fine. Technically, Trunk's timeline was the original timeline from Dragonball, shit hit the fan in the worst way possible. Trunks came back once, fought the androids, that made 3 timelines, story timeline, trunk's time line, and then trunk's timeline where androids survive. Then, Cell kills trunks in the one where the androids survived, came back in time, did the cell games stuff, got killed, you know the rest. Mind fuck for sure, I know there's a whole bunch of stuff online about it, but my brain hurts from typing out this long ass comment so that's probably above my pay grade.

This isn’t spoilers cause it is never explained in the anime: Trunks’ form is called “Super Saiyan Rage” which is a rage induced power-up. He couldn’t obtain SSJ Blue ‘cause that requires god Ki, which he doesn’t have. I hope this clears things up.
