The DBZA pointed it out brilliantly (though Curtis most likely doesn't remember) Gohan says to Future-Trunks: "So it's like a multiverse theory, where every actions creates parallel universe" FT: "How do you know about that?" G: "I'm reading about theoretical physics right now... Or it's just physics now, I guess" (Something like that) Also in Trunks special when Trunks goes to back first time Bulma is witnessing and says at the end "And multiverse theory it is.."

This was (in my opinion) the worst episode when it comes to characterization. (even above the Zamasu meeting episode which displayed Goku acting like Luffy) Goku "forgot" the senzu beans, something that's so inconvenient that its just there for the plot instead of adding a flaw to Goku's character. (he's only been noted to be forgetful for one thing and that was for the sake of comedy instead of a serious scene/that being briefly forgetting what the date was for the androids arrival in the android arc). Everyone seems surprised that Goku had a good idea despite the fact previously they have been shown to respect him and his decisions even going along with "bad" ones. (like not killing Dr. Gero before the date when the androids arrived) They have basically been treating Goku like a chunk of the DB Fanbase treats him, like a forgetful idiot who's only motivation is fighting.

Just in case it's not clear, the two timelines are like separate universes. Stopping Zamasu in "the past" wont fix "the future." It was Trunks' using of the time machine in the Cell Saga that created the "past" timeline in the first place. The timeline we all know and love is a created one. Trunks' "future" timeline is the real one. (If there is a "real" one. Trunks' future predates our "past," at any rate.)
