I was blown away by this episode when I saw it. And I was once again blown away further when I realized that the entire episode is something like 98-99% dialogue. Just the characters talking hardly any action is taken. No fighting, nothing. It really speaks to the strength of this story. Most Shonen Anime probably would've had this happen during a pause in a fight.

I just love this episode for the sheer fact that they let this moment have its light. They let the emotion really take hold and set in. They didnt cut away to one of the many other situations going on. There was a concerted effort here to solidify this moment as a crucial point where our happy-go-lucky protagonist truly walks that line between light and dark. He was ready to kill them with impunity. Throw away his innocence and become something grey. He was always a warrior for justice but now hes so blinded by rage that he feels revenge and justice are the same.

In harsh times, the young ones ,more than the old, doubts their ideals or choose to disregard it, which is a normal adaptation process that we all had to go through to emerge from the other side a different being, have this person emerge form this holding an empathic constructive new ideals we call that maturity.

Now i can talk about the similar effect that Rage have had on Gon and Goku (in the Freeza Saga specifically). Gon in this scene is clearly not acting as he normally would. Gon is normally happy and joyful however due to the events at the middle point of this arc his rage began to raise and raise as he had to wait to fight Pitou. All of what Gon did in this scene is out of character for him. (not in a bad way though, not like he broke character out of nowhere or anything) Gon's actions and attitude toward Pitou, Blind Girl and especially Killua his Best friend are completely off from his old self. He shows little care for the Blind Girl, he berates Killua and despite Pitou's pleads for Gon to wait so she can heal Blind Girl he prepares a super move on them both. In this moment Gon's anger has gotten the best of him and is heavenly dictating his actions. If it weren't for Killua telling them their true objective than Gon would have killed Blind Girl and Pitou and im not 100% sure how Gon would have reacted to that result afterwards. Afterward he might have come to his senses and regretted Blind Girl's death (sorry im bad with names if y'all could not tell). Gon could also mourn after realizing he killed Pitou before she could "fix" Kite. Either way he wasn't acting rationally and was being motivated purely by rage. Now some my question how it Goku's Super Saiyan Rage at all similar to Gon's. Well i think in the anime they don't handle it anywhere near as well as in the manga. After Krillin is killed and Goku enters his new transformation, Goku has several out of character moments. First off once he achieves Super Saiyan the first thing he tries tells Gohan is to leave the planet with the critically injured Piccolo before he dies and they lose the Dragon Balls for good. Gohan goes "uh uh" and Goku yells at him for the first time in the manga. Goku normally has a light tone when talking to Gohan, never raising his voice to him as he knows how to talk to his son. Goku here displays a short fuse which he didn't have before transforming. The second moment is when Freeza is charging up his Full Power and Goku is allowing it due to his warrior spirit and respect for Freeza as a Warrior. King Kai tries to convince Goku to not allow this and they say this, King Kai: What are you doing Goku?! Can you hear me?! Now's your chance!!! Now's the time to attack, when Freeza's concentrating on his Power!!! Goku i know you can hear me!! What are you- Goku: I hear you, Lord of Worlds. King Kai: But why- Goku: It's just... i might never have this chance again. I mean, to check out the most powerful guy in the whole universe at full power... Kind Kai: Ch-check out...?! Goku... do you have any idea what your saying?! Have you gone insane?! Goku: I'll fight Freeza at full power... and Win! King Kai: Thi-this isn't a game!!! Goku!! Goku!! Goku yelling: I'm going to avenge Krillin's death!!! He's died Twice!!! He can't come back to life anymore!!! He was my best friend... Mor than that... he was a really good guy... and Freeza killed him. King Kai: Then don't wait until he's at full power!!! and what about Gohan and the others...! Goku: They'll be fine... I Swear. Goku: I'm waiting for you to reach full power, Freeza. I want to beat you while your at your best... so you'll have no regrets as a warrior. You wanted it that way, didn't you? Or else you would've fired at the planet again adn tthat would've been it. Freeza: ... heh... Yamcha on King Kai's planet: L-lord...? King Kai: He's... not... Son Goku anymore... He's the warrior of Rage... a Super Saiyan... (sorry about all the ?! and !!!'s i was typing it out of the manga word for word. I guess Toriyama loves these "?!".) His attitude toward King Kai is completely different from how he was at the middle point of the arc as he respected King Kai's wish for him not to fight Freeza as he also told to Vegeta. The only reason he fought Freeza was because Freeza was already fighting his friends and winning, however here he completely flips out and yells at King kai when he asks him if he thinks "this is a game" King Kai's last comment confirms that Goku is not acting like Son Goku the Saiyan of Earth but instead The warrior of Rage a Super Saiyan. Goku's rage much like Gon's controlled him and compelled him to act differently though there was more of Goku in tact in the rage than Gon's as Gon had to be reminded of saving Kite to stop him from killing both Pitou and Blind girl. Goku had enough rationality to let his martial artist spirit stop him from immediately killing Freeza as he powers up. Of course unlike Gon, Goku couldn't be talked into killing Freeza like Gon was talk out of killing Pitou.

What I love about this Curtis, if this was the first episode of Hunter x Hunter you watched, who would you think would be the bad guy here? Some crazy writing.

I wasn't perfectly enjoying this scene UNTIL the narrator Shut Up. After that i started liking it again but before was taken out of the moment as the Narrator explained it all as if were were reading a regular old book. (I know i'v been complaining about this alot but i can't get it out of my head due to how much better all this would be if the Narration wasn't everywhere.)

This is why i love hunter x hunter, there is no such thing as a 'good or bad' person, only the in between grey areas, everyone just does what they think is right, like how pitou is trying to save a human life, and gon just doesn't care and wants to attack. even the king and the ants in general, they view us as a lower species and a food source, just like how we view our animals like chicken the same way

When I first watched this, I couldn't help but flash back to Zepile's (that antiques dealer/forger from the Yorknew City arc) description of Gon: how he ultimately does not care about the good or bad of things beyond how theyaffect him and those he cares about, and how he 'cannot be appraised'. And now, we're beginning to see just how deep that rabbit hole can go.

Im glad you didn’t start hating Gon or anything because of this episode. Some people hate or dislike him just because of what he said to Kil, but I don’t get that. Gon is a kid and clearly not mentally sound here. Him pushing Killua away is a very human reaction

My thoughts on Gon: The reason Gon snapped IMO is first of all the relationship he had with Kite which was, unfortunately, not fleshed out well in the 2011 adaptation. Him meeting Kite in the woods is the first thing we see in the Manga. He's not only the closest thing to a father figure in Gons life, he's also Gings student. He's Gons only connection to his father whom he idolizes and wants to emulates. Gon being like "oh i forgot all about this Kite guy up till now" in the 2011 version, completely diminishes the importance of their relationship. He does not only feel bad about his father figure dying, but he also feels guilty for causing Kite to lose his arm in the first place and then subsequently his life. For more then a month he had this image of Pitou, the cruel monster that kills humans for no reason, in his mind. He fantasized about meeting her, beating her, taking out his anger on her and finally killing her. All of this has just been building up inside of him. But now he comes and sees a Pitou whos healing a wounded human girl and shes begging him to let her finish the procedure. This reality has nothing to do with the disgusting Pitou in his mind. He's being denied the chance to unleash his fury..the moment hes been craving for so long. Which is why the last episodes have been dragging on, and teasing this meeting so much. Its so us viewers can empathize with the protagonist and feel his frustration, because we've been waiting and fantasizing about this meeting for so long.

Perfect assessment. People dont keep in mind that this friendship is extremely important to Killua. Hes been brought up to think he doesnt need and doesnt deserve friends. Remember when Killua thought to himself:"Gon you are light. Sometimes you shine so brightly i must look away. But even so, is it still ok if i stay by your side?"

Now that it is no longer a spoil, here is what happened between Gon and Killua: 1. After Kite was attacked by Pitou, Killua took Gon away. Killua was bummed because of the whole thing, but Gon reassured their friendship by saying "let's get Kite back together". "Together" is the keyword here, as Killua's fear of losing Gon is pushed away; 2. After Knuckle finds Kite, and Gon sees his broken figure before him, Gon tells Killua "That one (Pitou) is mine". Not "ours": mine. Killua feels Gon distancing himself, even if not on purpose. 3. Killua helps Gon reach his goal (finding Pitou) all the way, but always aware that, when the time comes, Gon will not ask Killua's help. That is what why (on the scene where they were heading to Pitou, a few episode ago) Killua was afraid to ask Gon (ask to help him, but he was afraid Gon would say "no"). 4. Finally, when Gon says "you have it easy, Killua. It means nothing to you", Killua feels he finally lost Gon's trust and will to be together with Killua. Remember: Gon is Killua's first friend, after being forbidden of having any friends his entire life. Gon's friendship is too dear for him, which is why Killua feels like he is always on the verge of losing it at the firs sign of crisis between them.

This is one of my favourite episodes tbh, it so perfectly gives you the confrontation you have been waiting for but in a way that you never ever would have expected. An average show would have just had them meet and have a battle but HxH takes it in a completely different direction and it's all the more emotionally impactful for it.
