In early episodes, he slaughtered guards/MPs left and right to get to people like Tucker, and blew up a whole street to get away from Lust and Glottony. Compare that to now, when he dropped part of the ceiling right next to him so he wouldn't have to hurt the MPs in the train station, and then disappeared in the smoke to avoid fighting the ones on the bridge.
