The way I understand it the fortunes show what will happen if you continue as if you haven't read them, and knowledge of them can make you make other decisions which in turn can change your future. Kind of like if you're driving straight ahead without any plans of changing directions, someone tells you that if you continue driving that way you will end up crashing, and you change directions to avoid the crash.

You should probably watch the current opening and ending, since they show all the troupe members that way you won't be confusing 2 different characters. In the ending they have Illumi show up next to Killua and Chrollo is shown as basically the leader of all the members of the phantom troupe in the opening and ending.

If I had to guess it's a test of loyalty. Ordinarily after such a test as the one at the mansion they'd be hired (or they'd just be interviewed then hired), if they go out and get this stuff. It means that they are dedicated to getting the job and will take whatever the job can throw at them. Anyone who quits instead of doing what they were told, wasn't cut out for the job to begin with.

Curtis it's not uncommon for fortune tellers in fiction to be unable to predict their own futures. No one can see the future, so logically if someone were able to see it. There'd have to be some sort of trade-off. Also this girl seems to be obsessed with Mummies what with wanting the right hand of one and bidding on the complete one of a Princess.
