NH Adventure-Post Search and rescue
Added 2024-08-16 21:55:15 +0000 UTCAfter a grueling journey down the mountain and back through the forests to Konoha City, Naruko and Hinata with Sakura in tow finally approached the towering walls of the capital, relief etched on their faces as it was alrady passed midday, and the days had been wearing on them all with a couple of days travel.
Sakura, visibly worn but determined, led the way through the bustling streets, their path leading them to a familiar, comforting sight - Tsunade’s Apothecary and Clinic.
The building itself was an impressive structure, a large multiroom house, the exterior made of sturdy, well-aged wood and stone, with tall, arched windows that allowed natural light to flood the interior. Vines with medicinal herbs climbed up the walls, some flowering with vibrant colors, indicating the building’s purpose.
The roof was gently sloped with terracotta tiles. intricate carvings of mythical creatures and medicinal symbols along the edges, hinting at the arcane knowledge held within.
A thick, stone wall surrounded the buildings side and rear, providing both security and privacy. Behind it lay a lush garden filled with a variety of medicinal plants, herbs, and flowers, all meticulously cared for.
The garden was not only Tsunade's sanctuary, but where she grew rare and potent ingredients for her concoctions. The scent of fresh herbs and earth was always present, a calming fragrance that contrasted with the bustling city beyond the wall.
Sakura took a deep breath and stepped up to the entrance, marked by a large and intricately carved wooden door, opened into an inviting entrance hall, her nerves on edge as she was anxious as to what would await her return... or WHO.
Inside, the space was warm and welcoming, with polished wooden floors that had seen countless footsteps over the years. Shelves lined the walls, filled with jars, vials, and bottles containing various potions, herbs, and salves. Each container was meticulously labeled, and the air was thick with the scent of herbs, spices, and faint traces of magic - it gave the impression of a medicine shop more than a clinic.
The ground floor of the apothecary was quiet, an unusual calm settling over the space. Sakura glanced around, noting the absence of the usual bustling activity that marked Tsunade’s clinic.
"It looks like there are no patients today," she mused aloud, a flicker of relief crossing her face. "Master Tsunade must be out on a case."
Her relief was short-lived, however. As Sakura's gaze turned toward the stairs at the back and center, leading to the upper floors, the faint sound of footsteps echoed from above. Her heart skipped a beat as she recognized the voice.
"No..." the voice unmistakable. "I am here."
The atmosphere in the apothecary’s entrance hall thickened with tension as all eyes turned to the top of the staircase.
Tsunade stood there, a vision of commanding presence and exquisite, sensual elegance. Her open-front corset clung to her, held together by intricate laces but revealing enough to showcase her ample cleavage and the smooth skin beneath. Her skirt was artfully draped to one side, exposing a glimpse of her leg, stocking, and the delicate strap of her garter. A hooded robe hung loosely over her shoulders, the hood pushed back to reveal her striking features. Around her waist, a belt with numerous pouches while around her forearms straps adorned her, with magical stones and engraved runes embellishing the dark leather, hinting at the arcane power she wielded.
Sakura’s heart raced as Tsunade began her descent, each step deliberate and resonant in the wooden hallway. The authoritative clack of her heeled boots on the stairs accentuated the weight of the moment.
Even Naruko and Hinata, despite their exhaustion, felt the palpable tension in the air.
Tsunade’s reputation was a mix of warmth and formidable discipline. Known more for her healing prowess they ignored the rumours of her strict training methods; she had a way of instilling fear even in the most seasoned of apprentices.
Sakura, who had endured her rigorous training for years, knew the gravity of Tsunades silence.
As Tsunade advanced, Sakura's anxiety spurred her into a flurry of explanations, her voice wavering with each step. “Mistress Tsunade, I’m so sorry. Th-the group I was with, w-we found the cave and the materials, but—” she stammered, her words tumbling out in a rushed attempt to justify the delay, her attempts at explanation interrupted as each step on the stairs reverberated and made he jump a little, and each pause met with Tsunade’s unyielding, stern gaze.
The healer’s silence heavy.
“Th-they were... killed, but I was... caught by orcs, and...” Sakura continued, her voice faltering as her teacher approached the bottom step. “I was left alone, and—”
The more Sakura spoke, the quieter her voice became, gradually shrinking under Tsunade’s unwavering scrutiny.
When she finally reached the bottom of the stairs, Tsunade stood directly before her, the unspoken authority clear in her posture and expression, Sakura falling silent, her excuses dwindling as she faced her master. The room seemed to hold its breath, waiting for Tsunade’s response.
Naruko and Hinata, who had been standing back, felt a surge of concern for Sakura and were about to step in to support her explanations. However, as Tsunade descended the final step, her demeanor shifted from stern to unexpectedly warm and with a gentle motion, Tsunade placed a hand on Sakura's shoulder.
Sakura looked up, her face a mix of exhaustion and relief, and the tension in the room began to dissipate as Tsunade's reassuring touch and gaze was filled with a happiness that made Sakura’s anxiety melt away.
“Welcome home, Sakura,” Tsunade said warmly, her voice rich with genuine relief. “I’m glad to see you’re safe and not... too harmed.” she says looking at Sakuras torn clothing.
Sakura’s shoulders relaxed, and she returned Tsunade’s smile with a grateful expression, bowing her head in a traditional gesture of respect and gratitude, a formal acknowledgment of her return.
Tsunade responded with a nod, her demeanor embodying both authority and affection.
Turning her attention to Naruko and Hinata, Tsunade’s tone shifted to one of appreciation.
“Thank you both for taking on the quest from the guild and bringing my apprentice back safely.” she spoke her tone respectful and grateful.
Naruko chuckled awkwardly, scratching the back of her neck. “Oh, it was no problem,” she said with a half-smile.
Hinata, ever the picture of grace, offered a respectful bow. “I’m happy to have been of help,” she states softly.
With a nod, Tsunade walks closer to them, Sakura following close behind, and reached into one of the pouches on her belt, pulling out a coin purse, the jingle of gold coins audible as she handed it to Naruko, the weight of the purse was reassuring, a tangible reward for their efforts.
As Tsunade handed over the coin purse, her eyes narrowed slightly, a spark of recognition flickering in her gaze. “Have we met before?” she asked Naruko, curiosity piqued.
Naruko blinked, caught off guard by the question, and chuckled nervously. Before she could answer, Sakura’s tension surged once more, and she interjected quickly with a gesture to stay quiet.
But before Naruko could answer anyway, Tsunade’s smirk widened, a glint of recognition in her eyes. “Actually, I remember now. Naruko, you were the one who helped with that F-rank mission six months ago, gathering those rare herbs.”
Naruko nodded, a hint of embarrassment coloring her cheeks, as she realized why Sakura didn't want Tsunade to remember her. “Yes... that’s right.”
Sakura, trying desperately to signal Naruko to be cautious, bit her lip in frustration. But Tsunade’s gaze remained fixed on Naruko, clearly recalling the event with amusement.
“Oh yes,” Tsunade said, a playful glint in her eye. “The results of that mission were quite... fascinating as I recall... and has become profitable for me.”
Hinata, curious, turned to Tsunade. “What are you talking about?” she asked, her gentle voice breaking through the moment.
Tsunade’s playful smirk deepened as she began recounting the story. “Has she no told you? Well... Naruko here helped gather some herbs for Sakura’s potion experiment. Sakura intended to create a stamina-enhancing potion, but, as it turns out, the herbs were the wrong ones. Similar, but different.” She looked to Sakura "Though I am glad it taught you a lesson to CHECK your ingredients properly."
Sakura lowered her head in shame.
"Of course Sakura also sampled the potion herself, to check, as any good potion master would. If you trust your potions work, you should have no fear." Tsunade continues Sakura’s cheeks flushed a deep crimson as Tsunade reminded her of what happened, her eyes twinkling with amusement. “When Sakura drank the potion, instead of a boost in stamina, it had an... 'unexpected effect'.”
Naruko, feeling the heat rise in her own cheeks, glanced away, trying to maintain a facade of nonchalance despite her evident embarrassment.
Tsunade’s gaze shifted back to Naruko skipping a part of the story to inform Naruko of something related. “I ended up selling that particular concoction after some refinement, on a case-by-case basis to couples needing ‘assistance’ with their intimacy issues. Its become quite popular.” she grins, the profit is exorbitant due to its effectivness, which also means more money for her.
Sakura’s face turned an even deeper shade of red, her expression a mix of mortification and irritation. Tsunade didn't have to explain the 'results' as she remembered all too well the effects of the potion: how it had made her act on her impulses and led to an intensely awkward situation where she practically forced herself on Naruko in a highly uncharacteristic manner.
The memory made her squirm with both embarrassment and frustration.
Hinata sighed softly, her eyes drifting to Naruko, having gotten the idea despite the vagueness. “It seems that perverted incidents do have a way of following Naruko around.” she mused quietly with a resigned tone, as it was just another chapter in a long string of misadventures involving her partner.
The room fell into a tense silence as Tsunade’s story lingered in the air, each member of the group processing the implications of the tale in their own way. Sakura shifted uncomfortably, clearly wishing for the ground to swallow her whole, while Naruko’s attempt to appear unfazed only served to heighten the awkwardness, until it was abruptly broken as Naruko, and Hinata prepared to take their leave.
but, just as they were heading for the door, Tsunade’s voice halted them.
“Actually,” Tsunade called out, her tone shifting to a more business-like demeanor. “I have a request for you both. A favour if you will.”
Naruko and Hinata turned to face Tsunade, curiosity piqued, Tsunade’s gaze turned stern as she turned her head and addressed Sakura. “I want you to accompany Naruko and Hinata on a few missions. It’s clear you need more combat experience.”
Sakura’s expression fell, her cheeks still flushed from the earlier embarrassment. “But it was just a fluke.” she protested, her voice tinged with defensiveness. “Bad luck.”
Tsunade’s expression hardened, a dark glint appearing in her eyes as she matched her stern gaze with a wry grin. “A fluke or not, you still need more training." she announced, her voice taking on a serious edge, “Tell me, would you prefer to take on guild missions with Naruko and Hinata, or would you rather have some of my ‘personal training’ to get you up to par?”
Sakura’s blood seemed to drain from her face at the mention of ‘personal training’. The memory of Tsunade’s rigorous and often brutal training sessions—where she would always hear the words 'a healer needs to defend themselves as much as treat others, as no-one and nothing should halt them in their duty of care!'—flashed vividly in her mind. The thought of facing that kind of intensity again made her shudder.
“Alright, alright,” Sakura said with an awkward laugh, trying to mask her discomfort. “I’ll go with them, and discuss it. Afterwards I'll come back later to change and rest.” She quickly moved towards the door, clearly eager to put distance between herself and the conversation.
Tsunade’s grin widened, a mixture of amusement and satisfaction in her eyes. “Have fun.” she said. “When you return I have a few private words to discuss with you.”
As Sakura, Naruko, and Hinata stepped outside, Sakura suddenly turned with a serious expression. “Master Tsunade, what about the patient we needed the potion for?”
Tsunade’s face softened slightly, but her eyes held a hint of regret. “The situation worsened,” she admitted with a heavy sigh. “What we hoped to achieve with the potion will no longer work, as it has passed that critical point.”
Sakura’s shoulders slumped, a wave of guilt washing over her. “I’m sorry.” she said quietly, her voice trembling slightly.
Tsunade placed a reassuring hand on Sakura’s shoulder. “Don’t blame yourself. Acquiring that potion cost more lives than it would have saved, even if you had returned on time. You did what you could.”
Sakura nodded, her expression still troubled, though she understood the seriousness of her failure.
With a final, grateful nod to Tsunade, she turned and walked out the door with Naruko and Hinata.
As the door closed behind them, Tsunade let out a deep, weary sigh of relief, rubbing her temple, allowing herself a moment to feel the weight lift of worry, grief, and joy from her shoulders.
Her prized student had returned safely, and for that, she was deeply thankful. Now, with the immediate worry of Sakuras safety behind her, she could refocus on the myriad of responsibilities awaiting her attention.
