That's a tough one. Working on redeeming oneself shouldn't mean getting a pass at one's history. A person has to acknowledge the harm they caused in the past and not make excuses for their actions/behaviors. But if they can, and prove that that they're genuine in wanting to change and be better, then it makes the darkness of the past not so dark.
