Who knew there would be so many decisions to make as a quadriplegic!
Urethral catheter's versus suprapubic catheters.
Autonomic dysreflexia which happens because my body cannot regulate normal bodily functions such as alerting me of pain, so my blood pressure goes extremely high when there is any kind of bad stress in my body which needs to be addressed. As I explained in the video, all of my dysreflexia episodes have been because of blockages of sediment in the catheter preventing drainage. The only way to fix extremely high blood pressure in this case is to change out the catheter. Normally, when you go through a caregiving agency, only nurses are allowed to switch out catheters. The same is true for tracheostomy sites. However, because in the state of Colorado there is an option through a program with Medicaid to become your own independent Agency hiring caregivers of your choosing, we have trained all of our caregivers how to replace both the catheter and the TRACHe ostomy.
These are simple procedures, however extremely important and delicate. My caregiving team right now, with the exception of one person who just literally up and left overnight, is very invested in my car and I feel very confident and safe with everyone of my caregivers. I wish that everyone could find good people like them and I'm just praying in manifesting that I will be able to find immaculate caregiving folks in Washington state when I return..
