Trying out RE4R!

I'm back! Long story short, honestly this very almost didn't make it to Patreon at all lol. Let me know if you think I should upload it for YouTube audience or if you even want to see more from my re4r adventures on here haha. I was not in the right headspace to film on the day that I did, no idea why I even tried! My bad... I don't think my gameplay is terrible or anything, but I am really slow and overwhelmed at how different it is from the previous two. My playstyle is very verrrrry slow and I have plenty of experience on YouTube now to know how much that style annoys people and I really don't fancy reading through those comments right now so I may avoid the comment section for this one, haha. I didn't really click with the game right away! It's so different! I'm so stressed with the villagers! Any tips for crowd control?!

Trying out RE4R!

Wow that was really good for the village section. This part is kinda infamous and you got it on second try! Also the floor breaking in the tower was added in the remake because it was a valid strat to hide up there for the original afaik.

Valentin Venzin

You Got through the village on the 2nd attempt. Damn. I played the original back in the day and I’d mostly forgotten about the game, but when I pushed open those gates and saw the Pyre it all came flooding back. I thought “I am screwed”. You’re doing really well. Keep going.

Iain Dearden

This is feeling a lot like your Hollow Knight playthrough, with you beating the bosses first try, all while apologizing for your gameplay. You are way too hard on yourself! You are entirely intended to feel overwhelmed, and even die, in the opening sequence in the village with the chainsaw guy. That is exactly the intended effect they were going for. Really hope this one continues!

Ben

That was a very enjoyable couple of chapters Amber. I have never played RE4 precisely because it wasn't in the same style as RE2/3 but after watching you it has certainly kindled my curiosity and I really hope that you continue with it. I love your gaming style and your genuinely spontaneous reactions as you face each situation. You usually seem to be having fun and that is what gaming is all about, however,if this particular game isn't ticking the right boxes by all means try something different but personally I hope you persevere with it.

Crowd control in RE4 is about like it is in RE2 and RE3: knee-cap the ganados (literally "cattle", not "zombies" this time around), retreat, and fire again. Leon's better trained this time around, so he can now give them a swift kick in the face JCVD-style if they're stunned. If you're lucky, Leon's melee will deal the killing blow. If not, you'll lay them out flat, giving you an opportunity for a speedy retreat or a swift stabbing. Treat dealing with groups like bowling: round-housing a stunned pack leader will likely knock down the entire group or disorient them enough to get away (or, again, ample time for more stabbing because Leon really likes stabbing). As far as ammo goes, don't worry about "wasting" it. The game is quite generous with it, especially since ganados drop ammo (in addition to money) upon death. The same goes with knife durability. There will be plenty of knives laying around, so go stab-crazy when you can.

Andrew

about the inventory space issue you can buy case upgrades from the merchant. i think you missed it.

You did really well! The first bit of the game is supposed to be a baptism by fire where they just throw all the enemies they have at you. You did shoot a lot of bullets but that's the thing with RE4, it has a lot of bullets waiting for you! Please stop being so hard on yourself. You're doing great, better then a lot of people i've seen play the game. And while you can't always take it slow and methodical in this one, from what i've seen you can handle the faster parts of the game just fine :) It IS a big departure from RE2R though, that's for sure. While overall lower on horror, it still does have its fair share of oppressive atmosphere. It's now just interchanged with a bunch of shooting in between. At the end of the day, as long as you have fun with it, keep it going, i really do hope it clicks somewhere down the line.

b0n3man

What a fun episode! Those environmental subtitles you stuck in were awesome and you handled those opening chapters like a champ. Interesting thoughts at the end, I can definitely see why some would find that opening section overwhelming. This game does give you more things to help deal with the locals than in other games, so it might be worth playing for a bit longer to see if that helps. I'd love to see more, but only if it's something you're actually enjoying. Maybe a break from Resi games wouldn't be a bad thing if you're not feeling it right now.

mattbrush3pwood

You make me feel bad for dying 5 or 6 times in the village my first time around 😅 (IMO, this opening is supposed to be hard and kick the player in the proverbial butt... the difficulty is a lot more gradual after that, it's an intentional design choice from the original that they didn't change) Honestly, you play the game perfectly as intended, and it was as enjoyable as ever: slow and deliberate, or quick and twitchy, the important part is your spin on it... I hope you continue, it's a different game from the first ones but just wait until you meet the wacky cast of this game, and you'll feel right back at home :D

Ok now you are frustrating me. I'm halfway through the video and you are nailing the gameplay. You know how many times it took me to survive the pre-bingo welcome party?! More than 2, I'll say that lol. You are doing too well to be worried about not doing well. You have beat Bloodborne and hollow knight. You gots this.

Stray Goat

Ok I rewatched the video and paid attention to your concerns. I will split my answer in two: 1.- Yep, I said the same thing about the tone once RE4, the original, came out. It was not a popular opinion back then, people would say I was crazy and would get very defensive. Some people still feel that way today. To me RE4 is not a "real" resident evil game. However objectively speaking it is a great game so I can't fault the people who love it. I also played it and found it fun but not really a Resident Evil game. 2.- In terms of gameplay I think you are just a perfectionist, which is great, but it can lead to a lot of self criticism. You did great, better than most playthroughs that I've watched. Your 85-91%+ accuracy is way above average compared to most streamers, especially on a controller. 1 death is no big deal. You handled all the waves of enemies perfectly fine. You paid attention to pick up most of the treasure out there. You paid attention to item prompts and how to mix herbs. You paid attention as to how gem inlays, mixing, the merchant and the gun specifications work. Paid attention to traps way more than other streamers/players do. Ultimately I also think that if people are rude, unless it's criticism which helps you, ignore them. If they are egregious, ban them. Your attention to detail makes you rather unique. If you remove too much of who you are in order to serve "the crowd," not only is an impossible task, I think would be a mistake. Your attention to detail is part of your personality and uniqueness. Anyways, you are doing great.

Edd

If you don't like it, don't put it on the Tube. It's hard to watch people playing a game they clearly don't like/enjoy but have to for the views and stuff.

sundmark67

As a kid who liked watching my brother play the pre-rendered "horror" Resident Evil games, I was really disappointed when I tried playing RE4 on the Gamecube. I was totally overwhelmed and couldn't beat Mr Chainsaw. So I really enjoyed this video, I liked how patient/scared you were in the first few group encounters. I'm sure some youtube comment elitists will get upset with the sniping and window cheesing, but I think you should just play it the way you feel comfortable.

Flukemarm

This was a very entertaining episode with some really fun moments and edits! I wouldn't be concerned about releasing it due to a lack of quality. If you don't feel like playing it now (or ever), that's another story, of course. You should play what you want to play. I will now transition into the trivia part of my comment! With Resident Evil 4, the developers wanted to shake up the formula and many iterations of the game were made. An early version of the original RE4 was deemed unfit to be called a Resident Evil game. That game would later be known as Devil May Cry. Another scrapped version seemed to take a more supernatural direction. It was far enough into development to have some footage released: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jGRZwypXMFg In the original version of the game, the loot dropped from enemies would disappear after a while. This caused me so much stress in certain sections!

Congratulations on 70k subs. You deserve it 👏

I’ve loved all of the resident evil videos you’ve done so far, and I love this one too! You did play really well, I died in the opening village section so many times when I did it. You were playing a little on the slow side, but it was still very enjoyable to watch. As for crowd control tips, I found stealthing for as long as you can before the fight helps, since it can thin out the crowd. The game wants you to play close to the enemies once combat starts, it pushes you to knife enemies on the ground and roundhouse kick them to make space. Don’t be afraid to run backwards or push through enemies if you are starting to get cornered. You’ve done great so far honestly!

Matthew A

You did a fine job, I didn’t feel like there was anything off at all. Looking forward to more.

As someone who loved the original RE4 I think most of my nostalgia comes from the fact that it was released on a new game engine that made the game so much more playable. I bought the remake but cant get more than an hour in without losing interest because it doesn't have the same horror survival appeal that the Res 2 and 3 remakes have. Res 4 and 5 are similar and 6 really went off the rails as far as what resident evil originally was. 7 was when the company decided to go back to their roots and made a heart pounding survival horror again.

Mortytown Locos

i think you are too hard on yourself, i always enjoy your videos as it seems everyone else did but i do think people who comment on youtube just tend to be negative regardless, i’d recommend paying less attention to those and more to the ones on here. i think re4r is amazing but you just have to keep an open mind and remember this is a quite different game, but one i think will grow on you if you give it a chance

ZephtheMagicEnby

I don't mind, you are doing great. I think the game is quite enjoyable but the big change is one of the reasons I suggested RE7 to RE8 or perhaps going back to RE1. RE4 changes the style a lot and it becomes mostly an action oriented game. RE7 is more about ammo conservation, a more grounded character, puzzles and frankly, horror. The main character I also think would be more to your liking, at least in terms of personality, but that's just my opinion. I have personally loved every single one of your uploads, including this one. I know how damaging negative comments can be. Unfortunately that's how our minds work, even if a person gets a thousand positive comments there's the couple of horrible comments that our minds tend to focus on.

Edd

I think you should play another hour or two in and see if you start to vibe with it more. If it doesn’t seem like it’s for you, then don’t force yourself to play through it. A lot of the fanbase is very vocal about how much they love this game and I feel as though you’re spot on worrying about the toxic comments. If you want tips, the game felt very balanced around the parry system to stagger and then melee for a chunk of damage. If you can manage stealth, it’s a one hit kill and saves a lot of ammo. The story is a lot of fun and the DLC is spectacular, so if you can find a rhythm I think it’s really worth it. But to me it is my least favorite remake.

D$

Woo, excited for this one! Of all the remakes, this is my favorite and my favorite original also. In terms of tips, don't be afraid to run away to set up at another choke point. Also, leg shots will trip enemies so you can round house kick them, helping with cc. Lastly, don't be afraid to use ammo, there will usually be more soon after.

Daniel H.

The expanded map is part of the deluxe version and not part of the base game, same with the guns in storage. If you don't want the extended map enabled, I think you can remove it by disabling (asuming you are playing through steam) in the 'Manage' option on the game page in your library. Then on the DLC tab you can disable each individual dlc

Arkytior

Yup yup. Less ammo conservation in this one. My best advice is, "piss on the haters." People that watch you play love the way you play. That's why we watch. Slow and meticulous is great because you appreciate and can highlight design elements us normies don't.

Stray Goat

RE4R is absolutely an action game first, far less of a ponderous survival horror game so the feel is far different so it's not surprising that it feels off for you at the offset. I enjoy the hell out of the game, but for VERY different reasons than RE2R/3R. If you aren't enjoying it, no worries, but I would definitely love to see it continue, as it is a game that I do love and would certainly enjoy watching through. I'm happy with what you decide to do either way. Also, it's easy for me to say, but ignore the people hating on slow play styles. These games reward slow play styles plenty so I don't think you are playing it wrong whatsoever. Cheers, Amber!

Dorkenmore

Welcome back. I'm a bit burned out on RE to be honest, and I didn't have the time to play this myself this year, (never played older versions either) so watching this video and the series if you decide to continue will have to go in my backlog until I eventually get to the game myself. Sorry, that's not constructive feedback about the video itself, but if you don't click with the game, you can always save it for later. Hope you had a nice holiday.

The Mighty Pipe

I haven't watched the pre-release video yet. Might get a chance to later since you're considering not making it public to YouTube. RE4 is the point where the franchise took a hard turn to action schlock. It is a very, very different experience compared to RE, RE2 and RE3, and RE3 was already a departure from those previous games. I've played RE 1-4 original and remakes, and I can tell you RE4R is a massive improvement over the original -- if that means anything. That being said RE4 is where I stopped playing Resident Evil until RE7 brought back the horror aspects of the series. Don't feel bad if you don't enjoy it, it is either loved or hated typically depending on whether it was the first RE game you played or not.

l.h. riley

woo! i'm sure this will still be loads of fun! anyone who is gonna get mad at how you wanna enjoy the game just isn't worth listening to, gaming is for fun and if you're having fun then you're not doing anything wrong lol this one is very different for sure, you're free to swap from the mindset of being super worried about your ammo, at least as much as you were before, you get loads in this game! also, with big groups, i find that staying on the move and kiting enemies to keep out of their range is really useful, you're a lot more nimble than you were in the other two and you also have the parry as another defence option so make the most of your space. also! your kick moves are always worth going for, you clear out a space in front of you and do a bunch of damage. there are a lot more enemies per encounter in this one so it's a big mindset change, but once you're in the rhythm of it, it's so fun! also congrats on 70k subs!!

ChilledGricken

Wow, you're on a Resi streak! I think this was just the push I needed to finally start the game myself. As for YouTube, even tho I have yet to watch the video, I do feel it would be a natural continuation of your already established Resi series, so think there would be an interest and viewership for it if you did decide to upload to youtube

Human#19138980

Would be really happy for the series to continue, loving these. One tip is to shoot the knees and then do a kick attack, it’s kind of how they meant for you to take them down more easily

Austin

Hey Amber. I haven't played the remake yet, but the original RE4 was very different in vibe and style to the previous games. It's more action oriented and daft, with very different enemy types, so I can imagine this one will take some adapting to as well. Looking forward to watching this, don't worry if your gameplay is slow, I honestly think it's a vocal minority you're hearing complain about that. Remember that YouTube comments tend to be a hotbed of negativity in general, a lot of people who scroll that far are at least a little bit unhinged I reckon 😂 Take care!

Andy

uu been waiting for this one. Maybe for the next parts you'll be in a better headspace. But either way your videos are always fun to watch
