The second story? Russia is focusing all its remaining combat power on Bilohorivka, Bakhmut, and Marinka.

I understand that some think "a win is a win" but come on. What does it even symbolize? Nada. Нічого. Zilch. Bupkis. How stupid do they have to be at this point? (I know I know, Mean Girls reminds us: The limit does not exist.) If any of those animatronic sausage fillings make it back home, ain't nobody gonna be praising them. They're just going to get their ears boxed for bringing home a toilet when there's no running water.

Another member said that history will recognize Bakhmut as the pivotal point in the whole war. I completely agree. It will be seen as the purely symbolic, strategically meaningless meat grinder which depleted russian forces so severely that Ukraine's counter offensive swept over the russians and won the war OR it will be seen as the purely symbolic strategically meaningless meat grinder which so severely depleted Ukraine's precious reserves and ammunition, delaying and blunting Ukraine's counter offensive which led to Ukraine losing the war. I hope to God it is the former.

So is Russia fighting so hard in Bakhmut just to be able to tell the Russian media “We captured (the rubble that once was) Bakhmut”? My impression is that Ukraine stayed because their philosophy was “If Russians want to dive headfirst into a wood chipper, be our guest”.
