Overanalyzing Korra: Long Live The Queen

Comments

ming-wa or something, p'li and i don't remember rock guy's name. but hey, i did remember these two!

Talya

What? In what way are the official novels garbage? Please englighten me

Marco Panzironi

Being able to choke the Earth Queen sounds a little more plausible when thinking about how much air pressure it would take to hit somebody, not blow them around but "air punch" them so hard they get knocked away. You also need a certain air density to breathe so Zaheer doesn't have to get rid of all of it, just most of it. Part of me thinks they should have made it a big tornado or something to really sell that it's a powerful move, though.

Gray_turtle

You know a scene is absurd when it causes OA to forget to pretend he doesn't remember the cabbage guy

maskofthedragon

I understand your complaints about the death of the Earth Queen, and people calling the technique that the air benders perform a vacuum, and at the same time I feel like the extended avatar media does try explaining the idea behind the technique in question. I'm sure someone might have said something already, but in the Yang Chen novels she uses a technique to remove all air from a room like the theories suggest, but no real vacuum is described as far as I can remember with it just being stated that she removed the air from the room until they passed out. It's slightly different to the incidents with Gyatso and Zaheer, but given that they seem to be continuing the trend in the novels I think it sets solid enough of a precedent in universe for this kind of thing being achievable even if it is rare (and made even harder to believe by Zaheer's relatively new status as an air bender).

Joair

Was that a will wood song I just heard?

glitchedpancake

I'm surprised you didn't mention Lin's weird bouncy animation in the shot of her driving the jeep. She looks like a paper doll being shaken around.

Dutch Letters

Not interested in more garbage

maskofthedragon

This isn't to say there aren't plenty of fans that totally misunderstand the idea of vacuums and pressure differentials, but I think a lot of the "can airbenders create vacuums" talk can be solved by an admittedly lame and anticlimactic rule about the language. Despite vacuums traditionally describing an area with NO air, there's also 'partial vacuums,' essentially only low-pressure areas, that are also very typically and simply referred to as vacuums. I think we can all agree he's not creating an eye-popping, blood-boiling outer space vacuum, but I think it's easy to imagine he's creating a "hey its hard to breathe in here," inside-of-a-vacuum-cleaner, 'vacuum.'

Jacob Anchors

Yes, yes we have instances of many airbenders being hyper precise with their bending: like when Yangchen made vacuums in nearby rooms, or caused implosions. Read the novels

Marco Panzironi

I was going to make some comment about how flimsy Ba Sing Se is shown to be, what with both series featuring it collapsing, and how that's kinda pathetic for this "greatest city in the world" type shit. But then I realize that we're told that there have been like a million peasant uprisings over the years, and so now I realize this is just lore accurate Ba Sing Se

Thothrax

Season 1 episode 10, towards the end of the episode. They jump in the water while riding Naga. Korra makes the bubble in the water after their inside it. I distinctly remember it because I thought it was odd.

Shado

Katara and Aang build the bubble around them as they descend in Serpent's Pass, I *think* it's the same for DOBS but I can't remember for sure rn.

Nichelle

Not to get all nerd shit, but you don't need to create a vacuum to take out somebody's breath, just a pressure differential. You do it every time you breathe in, and air benders seem to do it every time they move air. I don't think it's unreasonable that an airbender could bend with slightly more force than your diaphragm. And if he took out not only her vital capacity, but her total lung capacity (just a bit more) it would totally collapse her lungs and would be hard to re-expand on her own. I think the breath orb was just taunting, same as flinging it out of reach.

Samuel

Your writing and insight staying consistent is all I needed to keep watching, but your presentation and editing has just been constantly improving. I really felt it this episode, so many killer punchlines and one-liners.

Samuel

honestly the zaheer parts of this episode are probably my favorite part in korra, they just feel so climactic and like things are happening, which the rest of the show often doesnt feel like (damn you republic army for just straight up surrendering to the dumbass mech thats so silly it takes the tension away)

Wrenneru

I think the part with Mako shaking his fingers off in the prison is just because they were stiff; after all, you need to hold good form whilst firebending, or bending at all, and I imagine that gets a bit cramp-y after a while. That's how I read it, at least.

Fuzzy

While I agree the vacuum thing is frustrating. I still think Zaheer, based on what's shown, would have to have collapsed the queens lungs at least to have her die that way. I currently work in medicine. Your air isn't fully deoxygenated from one breath and you're lungs have a lot of what's called "Residual Volume." If she was just rebreathing her used air, she would have taken a longer time to asphyxiate and she would not have reacted by pulling all her accessory muscles, which is implied by her desperate gasping sounds. She wouldn't have felt anything alarming. Eventually she would have felt dizzy and just feinted, but that's minutes away. Zaheer being able to remove the air later and her still not being able to breath implies she could not expand her lungs even after his bending influence left. This would have to be a collapsed lung for her symptoms. Usually this happens because of outside pressure in the pleural space (The space between your lungs and your actual chest, where they slide back and forth), caused by blood or air entering the pleural space. But if even one lung fully collapses it takes some help and time to open it back up properly. Like, days. Maybe even a couple weeks for full function. Which would explain why she still died. So this would imply Zaheer moved the air out of her lungs forcefully, collapsing them. This is reinforced by previous events of humans accidently exposed to vacuums have varying effects but most survive even 90 seconds in a vacuum. You're lungs can fight a vacuum. Sort of. At least for a short time. Zaheer seemingly ripped the air out so hard it squished her lungs. BUT this is contradicted later when Korra survives having this move done to her. Without anyone bag-valving her, or performing CPR, or introducing extra surfactant into her alveoli (Fancy lung lubricant your body makes so your lungs don't fall apart on you after every exhale.) But again, it's frustrating because the amount that comes out of the earth queen kind of vaguely looks like its the amount that would have come out of a person if you removed all their lung volume. There is a device called an Incentive Spirometer that can be used to exercise your lungs and check what your Expiratory Volume to Max Inspiratory Volume is and its typically like a couple Liters, give or take. But your body also has about one-third of that volume still in your lungs that you physically, literally, are incapable of exhaling because it would kill you. Fun Facts. Pardon my ramblings. This scene has annoyed me for ages and Korra surviving the move, even if maybe incomplete always sits weird with me. And Zaheer doing it to begin with is also odd to me.

StarFishHugger

Those bubbles still started above ground. Katara parts the water at the serpents pass and then closes the bubble over and around them as they descend. In day of black sun Katara dives under with Appa but you see her wave her hands before submerging and then it shows her underneath already in a bubble.

StarFishHugger

Wasn't Asami chained to the floor? Biology/Space fact, being exposed to a vacuum would pop your eyes out if no outright burst them.

Chibi

At 13:45 I think mako might be shaking his hand just because it’s getting sore from what he’s doing. Bending is a physical art after all

Data Analysis Cosby

They do it regularly in ATLA AND KORRA the one I think of initially is in serpents pass as well as during the day of black sun

Hunter Sage

Iroh blasted the wall himself, twice

maskofthedragon

Have any waterbenders ever made a bubble while underwater? I’m pretty sure no, it’s always been above water going in, right? This would be really relevant IMO to whether airbenders can realistically create a vacuum that easily. Air is HEAVY. Moving it is easy—it’s fluid—but parting it and creating an actual vacuum would take immense force.

A Sack of Paincakes

I gotta say the wall being melted down is my favorite part. It's so epic and triumphant and it destroys a part of the world we've known for years to be indestructible

Duncan

I remembered their names off the dome and I can’t tell if I’m proud of that or not

Jake

in my headcannon, this, among many other quotes from other episodes makes OA officially a stoner and i just want to know how often he watches avatar baked

Brett Cocking

It kind of looks like Asami hits that guard WITH the handcuff. Just the way it's angled when he falls I guess makes me think that. If that's the case....damn I'd probably be knocked out if I got surprised wacked with solid metal.

Gravitationally Challenged

I think when Zaheer kills the earth queen what he's doing is removing the air from her lungs, causing them to collapse. So she can't breathe

Sami El-Imam

Korra's escape has got to have some of the worst writing in the show, from the Papier-mâché blimp to introducing the single strangest animal in the series by a mile

maskofthedragon

I did not know the red lotus’s names off the top of my head lmao. Compare that to Mai and Ty Lee, and it’s clear there’s an issue. I think the Korra plotline is honestly just to give Asami a purpose and build up the idea they share a unique bond. It falls super flat because Asami just doesn’t work as a character. She’s completely uninteresting, and they desperately want her to be cool without giving her proper justification. Sokka had to earn it, and Suki had been a warrior her entire life

Clayton

Yup. In Kyoshi's first novel, when Kyoshi is first starting to firebend she accidentally burns herself. Not burning yourself with the fire you emmit is a skill firebenders learn. It would make sense that you are skilled enough at that to do regular sports and combat firebending but it may be tough to sustain for a longer time while you use your fingers as a blowtorch. Or you might need to shake your body a bit to keep focus.

Luis Carlos Loaiza

Also Zaheer’s group not having personalities really makes me sad because villain gangs is one of my favourite tropes in fiction. I love groups like the Phantom Troupe from Hunter X Hunter and the League of Villains from My Hero Academia (pre-the Paramout Liberation War) so much, so seeing that potential in Zaheer’s group go squandered is extremely disappointing

Desert Espada

Since you mention cars, I think you mean carbon _monoxide_?

Will Beason

Hiroshi's death next season is pretty damn clear

Jordan

I didn’t know Ghazan but I knew P’li because her death scene is one of the few scenes I remember from this show very well. Couldn’t tell you anything else about her other than her make out sessions with Zaheer though lol

Desert Espada

I always thought the whole Mako shaking off his fingers seemed to me more like something you would do after straining them for a long time. Not necessarily because of the heat but he's clearly putting a lot of focus and tensing his muscles a lot in his hand given the other hand supporting it, keeping it accurate. Like he's been holding on to something heavy for a long time to burn through a metal bar like that. Plus, we've already seen that fire bending can act as a sort of propulsion. Putting that amount of focus into a tiny little fire might create enough force that he would need to strain a lot to keep it in place.

JoeBie

What Zaheer is doing is much more ambiguous, but Avatar Yangchen could remove air from a room, though she had to be very careful because it could easily kill someone if continued just a little too long.

Vilmu

basically, at some point in breathing in carbon dioxide, no matter what you do, you will die. Like, sitting in a garage with your car on, it makes your body think that it isn't breathing, and then at some point, there is to much carbon dioxide in you to keep you alive without specialized machines that as far as I've seen, are not in this show, and would not be readily available for the queen. And its not that he's keeping all the oxygen out, he is keeping just enough air from coming in, to make it so she is mostly breathing her own air.

Sargent _Carrot69

11:56 why does Zaheer say it like that?”Who-whim”

Arclides

Vimeo is fine woo

Justin Gregory

Zaheer and Henchman #3's romance was something added late into development too, so there is a draft where the Red Lotus had even LESS personality

maskofthedragon

Ghazan and P'li. Knew that off the top of my head.

Sathar

Interesting I did not need to Google the names of the Red lotus I knew all four of them before you even asked

Daniel Lenoir

No problem, YouTube hates me anyway and refuses to let me watch videos. (Might be related to the fact that I downloaded 320GB of videos recently…)

Fabian Röling

Yeah E;R said something I agree with that cartoon villain groups such as team rocket are known for their wacky and contrasting personalities which makes the red lotus bland by comparison. Make Ming Hua more aggressive and Ghazan more cautious butting heads with Ming while Pli is more softer and concerned with zaheer than their cause would be more effective.

jejmsmdm kkdkekd

The Korra B plot is so silly, that it's hard to believe this is the same episode Rita Repulsa gets smoked in

Crashing this blimp, with NO SURVIVORS
