Episode 685: Chrono Trigger at 30 + The Magic of Japanese Game Tapes

UPDATE NOTE: It turns out that Brian somehow vanished from the audio mix in the final MP3 file conversion—a strange glitch that I've never seen happen before. I've uploaded a new stereo file that restores his contributions. It's twice as large, but it's complete, and that's what counts.

Jeremy: This week's episode comes to you hot ’n fresh from Midwest Gaming Classic a couple of weeks ago. Yep, it's a pair of live panels. I really feel like we've got a great handle on our live recordings—not only was this one of the best presentations we've given, to one of the biggest and more enthusiastic audiences that's ever come out to see us, but the recordings don't suffer from the sound issues that can often affect live recordings. Really, the difference between a studio podcast and a live presentation is the difference between a great band's studio album and their live show, and that makes this episode a solid concert album. Don't worry—no drum solos.

It doesn't hurt that I organized the Chrono Trigger panel to revolve around a visual presentation that ended up not working, so you can listen to this panel and have the same experience as the audience at the show. Actually, your experience will be a little better! I'm uploading the presentation in a separate post, and you can follow along and see what the MGC audience couldn't. I'm also uploading the video clips that accompanied the Game Tapes segment, so you can watch those as well.

I'm joined this episode by Kevin Bunch and Brian Clark. It was a smaller Retronauts crew this year than in past years, since travel to the U.S. is weird right now and all of our other regulars live in other countries. Nevertheless! We had a great time, and it sounds like the audience(s) enjoyed themselves as well! So please enjoy these recordings for posterity... and, of course, the visuals, uploading shortly in a separate post.

I finished listening to this episode a few days ago, and one item stood out to me. At one point the conversation turns to games that feature time travel, and how Chrono Trigger is possibly the only one (or one of very few) that does so on the SNES. This is not exactly true, as one year earlier Ganbare Goemon 3: Shishi Jūrokubē no Karakuri Manjigatame for the Super Famicom had a plot which involved Goemon and the gang traveling to a far-off future. The difference is that Chrono Trigger allows the player to travel back and forth through time.

Enjoyed the Chrono Trigger discussion. My cousin had it at the time so that's how I experienced originally. Didn't own it til the questionable PS1 version due to the price. As for the other part on Japanese game tapes, I have been enjoying both Jeremy's uploads and other similar videos being shown on the Twitch channel Oldtimecomputershow (I know I bring that up often lol).
