This Month In Retronauts: October 2023 edition

Listeners, I (Diamond Feit) must apologize upfront for a major gaffe in this episode. Whether I was possessed by a fiendish jackal or exhausted from too much podcasting, I couldn't say, but for some reason I described the iconic one-off powerup from Super Mario Bros 3 as Lakitu's Shoe. Latiku has no shoes; I'm not even sure if he has legs!

Otherwise I'm quite proud of our latest community episode wherein Stuart Gipp and myself go over the latest releases, news, and your comments and feedback. Look forward to our thoughts on recent video game-themed anime, unfulfilled Kickstarter campaigns, and which circumstances are best for spelunking. Don't forget to answer our latest question in the comments below, and maybe share a picture if you can!

I hope someone got fired for that blunder.

It's not strictly a video game costume, but I feel that this is close enough. A little context first: I am a musician, and one of my local venues hosts an annual Halloween Covers Show in which various groups get to dress up as their favorite bands and/or pop stars and play a short and lively 20 minute set of their best material. In 2018, my band decided to perform as Sex Bob-Omb, and as the bassist, the role of Scott Pilgrim naturally fell to me. We got dressed up and played all of the songs featured in the film to a largely disinterested audience, which in my mind only adds to the authenticity of our performance. Sadly, no Matthew Patel was available to interrupt our set, and at no point did we tear the roof off, but I did make sure to sip on Coke Zero in between songs. One of my favorite Halloweens ever.

Typical adventure game slander in this episode, even from Stu who likes Sierra! There’s no adventure game on earth where you could get stuck and then have to play “60 hours” to restart (as a letter writer said). A Boy and His Blob is like a 12 minute game, and most of the classics are probably less than 2 hours with foreknowledge. This would be like complaining about dying in world 8-3 in SMB3 and then having to restart “all the way back at the beginning”. Boo hoo!
