My thoughts when I heard this song was very much along the lines of what you said. Given now that all four of them have solo projects out (Calum and Michael's being the most recent ones this past June and July), I was curious to see once they started to work together to work on 5sos6 and what that would sound like and this was definitely not what I expected either, but I'm absolutely obsessed with this sound! I'm excited to hear the rest of the album too! I also love that you mentioned the Jonas Brothers in this because 5sos was actually a special guest at the Jonas Brothers anniversary tour show in Los Angeles a few weeks ago and they played She Looks So Perfect together! I was at the show and it was so cool! There's a YouTube video of it and I would love if you'd take a chance to check it out ☺️
