There's no trouble, we love hearing our readers thoughts! And that's exactly the reason why this whole arc exist on the first place. Your interpretation is correct in all aspects, including the one in which their mother abandoned them. The whole issue with their parents is not deeply explored, but we think they didn't know their dad, and that their mother gave up on them, so they had to grow up alone, with Shifty being forced to mature much faster to help both of them survive.
