Damn I wrote a long comment when I watched this two days ago but I guess I never sent it lol I’ll rewrite later. I gotta say now though I 100% share your sentiment about McGonagall sending the Slytherins to the dungeon. Wtf? And I otherwise like McGonagall. Im pretty sure that doesn’t happen in the books.

Like yes he murders, but in a sense it's the most humane way compared to other spells you could be using. Hell, Malfoy's cronies trying to burn Harry alive was more of an evil act than what Voldemort does.

Molly Weasley cussing out Bellatrix Lestrange and then straight up murdering her is such a legendary moment in the books, but it doesn’t have the same impact in the movies. In the books, it’s the only time anybody swears, it’s one of the only times dialogue is written in all caps, and it comes completely out of nowhere - especially because Molly is one of the most warm and wholesome characters up to that point. Also, fun fact vis-a-vis Neville getting such a glow-up: in the books, the “Chosen One” prophecy orb from the fifth movie is a much much bigger plot point, and all the characters assume that it’s talking about Harry - but in actual fact, if you pay close attention to the details of it, Neville technically fits all of the criteria just as well as Harry. Apparently, the original plan for the books was that Harry would stay dead when Voldemort kills him, with the twist that Voldemort misinterpreted the prophecy and Harry was never even the chosen one in tne first place, that it was actually Neville, and that he would ultimately get the kill. Ultimately, she changed it and had Harry live, but Neville still shares the kill with him,and there’s plenty of fan speculation that he’s actually some kind of alternate or secondary chosen one. Most of the characters that you mention getting short-shrift in terms of screen time and development (Sirius, Draco, Dobby, Voldemort, Mad-Eye Moody, etc) have a lot more in the books. There’s only so much you can do when you’re compressing that much material into two hours. Warner Bros is apparently planning to do the story over from scratch as a TV show at some point soon, and I definitely think there’s value in doing it in a longer form (even if these actors will be nigh impossible to replace). Hopefully they can also make improvements to some of the more… questionable aspects of the franchise while they’re at it.

I think then kept it out bc of the prequel movies (which btw, don’t bother watching them. They suck, even if Collin Farrell does an excellent job in the first one).

He creates all these plans (basically winging it that Harry gets to come back at all), ensuring that Snape kills him so that Harry could get The Wand, Bc just like Voldy he underestimated what was actually required to become the owner of that wand, and ultimately the Big Fight between Evil and Good boiled down to Harry and Draco wrestling each other for a wand. Had Harry not, by chance, won Draco’s wand, he would’ve died For Real against Voldy in a straight up duel (if only somebody brought a gun).

2023-10-19 15:52:19 +0000 UTCMolly (the mom) and Neville getting those big moments hits a lot harder in the books, Neville and Molly aren’t that much in the background in the story, plus the loss of her son hits much harder given there’s like a whole ass Weasley family arc happening since book 6? I think? I knew you’d enjoy the Snape and Dumbledore twist and trust me, lots of people have Feelings™️ about Dumbledore. Snape’s reveal is a bit more morally conflicting in the book, though I have to say there’s always something a little sad about him showing all his memories to Harry. Almost like asking for forgiveness. The climax of Voldy vs Harry is actually less magical! Harry gives the speech about the elder wand to voldy and then wins the battle by proving voldy can’t use it against him (Voldy dies and drops to the ground, his body as human and normal as everyone else’s). Harry does NOT break the wand, he uses it to fix his own, and put it back in Dumbledore’s tomb

Voldemort (as much as I love Ralph Fiennes and as much as I enjoy the character) is an idiot and incompenent. Harry is not. He grew so much and he is so brave. Other than that. Favorite characters in the movies (the ranking for the books is a bit different) 1. Severus Snape. That's an easy one. My favorite character in the movies and the books. (He's worse in the books!). Though I wouldnt use the word "redemption". It's more complex than that. I wrote a lengthy character analysis for a school assignment many years ago. He's partly based on a character called Heathcliff from the classic novel "Wuthering Heights". HIs complexity is unmatched in my opinion. In many ways he's a hero but he's ALSO a villain. A man capable of undying love but also consumed by hate and resentment. In his last moment he was able to see Harry not as a reflection of his father (the man he hates) but instead saw Lily's goodness in him ("you have your mothers eyes"). His other biggest attribute is bravery - something he shares with Harry. Which is interesting, because bravery is mostly associated with Gryffindor. Snape has a lot more Gryffindor in him than he thinks. And Harry ❤ - after everything Snape did to him, he still tried to comfort Snape and tried to stop the bleeding. He had NO reason to do this at that point. Deserves a spot on the list for that moment alone. Even Snape himself was not expecting Harry to do this for him. 2. Hermione Granger 3. Sirius Black (mostly for the third and best movie) 4. Harry Potter 5. Minerva McGonagall 6. Albus Dumbledore 7. Ron Weasley 8. Fred and George Weasley 9. Neville Longbottom 10. Remus Lupin (just for the third and best movie) Honorable mention for Gilderoy Lockhart (just because he's so much fun!) and Dobby of course.
