FULL LENGTH PAN'S LABYRINTH (2006) MOVIE REACTION

It's one of my favorite foreign films, but I'd say I prefer El Norte and Amelie in that order.

Robert Kruger

You've seen Pan Labyrinth, a splendid film that has cemented itself as a cult classic. A fantasy film with a great story and characters. This is not just a fairytale, it's a Guillermo Del Toro fairytale. He brings a wonderful flair in telling whimsical stories of wonder and mystery blended with gritty violence, gothic horror and visuals that are both beautiful and terrifying. The film is anchored by some stellar performances, Ivana Baquero as Ofelia is a great heroine and it's was one of her first acting roles. She knocked it out of the park as well as Doug Jones, contortionist, pantomime and creature actor extraordinaire playing both the Faun and the Pale Man. He fully transforms into this characters, iconic performances for the man who learnt his lines and Ivana Baquero's in Spanish despite not speaking it so that his performance would be authentic. Which made the voice work by Pablo Adan flow even better. The villain of the film, Captain Vidal is a amazing performance brought to life by Sergi Lopez and Del Toro's writing. A brutal, sadistic psychopath with a intense need for obedience and obsessed with his family legacy. He is such a unrepentant villain that you do cheer when he finally meets his demise. The actors who play Mercedes & Dr. Ferreiro also give a strong perfomances. This is the most successful foreign language film in U.S history and definitely one of the best films made in the modern era. I'm glad you liked it Jimmy, I look forward to the other films this month. Take care and peace.

Seriously. One of my all-time favorites, but I always forget about him because he so rarely comes up in discussions.

His name is Doug Jones and he's in several Guillermo del Toro movies. For example he also played the water creature in The Shape of water.

Captain Vidal is such an underrated villain. He's fantastic.

I wish, wish, wish this had come out when I was a kid. I would have been obsessed with it. The guy who plays the faun is fucking brilliant. Pretty sure that's actually just a dude in a suit and makeup, with some CG effects laid over top. No idea if he got any awards in Spain for his performance, but he should have! And, yeah, I could listen to his voice all day. The actress who plays Mercedes is great too. She was in another foreign film I love, Y Tu Mama Tambien, which I think is Mexican. I'll have to remember to recommend it next month!
