Colm Meaney's always a pleasure to see, Gene is funny and scary in equal measure. George Harris as Morty is also great, the scene when he gets his revenge on Freddie Hurst is one of the most brutal and unexpected turns I've seen. Kenneth Cranham and Michael Gambon are pros at playing old school gangsters. Cranham chewing the scenery as the up jumped hard man and Gambon delivering monologues as the ruthless but refined crime lord. Jamie Foreman is very entertaining as the Duke, Sally Hawkins as his unstable moll Slasher is equally hilarious and Burn Gorman doing what Burn Gorman does, playing bad guys with aplomb. It's a solid entry in the British crime genre of films and one of Matthew Vaughn's best films. You should definitely check out Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels. I believe it's one of the only brit crime films from Ritchie & Vaughn you haven't seen that and Revolver. Anyway thanks Jimmy and I will see you later, take care and peace.

2022-06-21 19:59:52 +0000 UTCThe twist at the end is fitting for the film as despite X's efforts to leave the criminal world behind after managing to avoid death that claimed more experienced and ruthless figures he's taken down by a unfortunate turn of chance. He could of survived the Serbians, Jimmy, The Duke, Eddie Temple etc. and gotten out but him falling for the girl of Duke's nephew Sidney, a jittery wannabe was a variable he failed to account for. Just goes to show that even being cautious, clever and ruthless when necessary your time in the Layer Cake can end without warning. The directing is great, it's a excellent start of Matthew Vaughn's directing career. It blew him up and he went to direct X-Men: First Class, Kick Ass and the Kingsman films. The cast is also splendid, Daniel Craig's performance is charismatic, intense and compelling. It's easy to see why this film was the reason why he was chosen to play James Bond. The man has a natural gravitas, he has lived-in weathered look and coarse delivery that it's totally believable he could be a high end drug dealer or secret agent.
