2022-01-27 17:27:22 +0000 UTCPitch Black is a great Sci Fi film, shot on a modest budget in the Australian outback and a underrated performance by Vin Diesel, who had two short films shown at Cannes film festival as a nifty piece of Trivia. This is the best of the Riddick films with Vin Diesel in top form as the enigmatic antihero with a strong supporting cast with Cole Hauser as the villainous merc Johns, Radha Mitchell in a meaty role as the reluctant heroine Caroline Fry and Keith David as the Imam, full of gravitas and wisdom. Claudia Black of Farscape, Stargate SG-1, Mass Effect and Uncharted 5 fame is also a pleasant surprise as the ill fated mechanic Shazza. This is a tightly paced SF horror film with a lot of good jump scares, action and emotional payoffs. The consequences are really felt, satisfaction when Johns' selfish actions get him killed and sad irony when Caroline redeems herself by saving Imam & Jack and is killed saving Riddick, after she convinced him to go back for the others. Despite him not judging her for trying to kill everyone at the start and for saving herself now. Riddick feels that loss as her life for his is not a trade he would make. Though it does show some humanity is still in the man with the shiny eyes. Glad you enjoyed the film Jimmy, the sequel expands upon the Riddickverse so that would cool for you to check out. There is a trick to that movie: if you watch the original version - then it's sci-fi, but if you watch the extended version it turns into a fantasy. So it's up to you what you want to watch. Can't say anything about the third movie - haven't seen it.
