This is how I open PDFs using the Books app on iOS. I prefer reading content that scrolls horizontally, similar to flipping through pages, rather than scrolling vertically.
I believe a similar method should exist for other operating systems and devices. If you know how to do this for other OS/tablets, please let me know in the comments.
